The Wildlife Journalist Investigating Sea Snake Sightings in Gulf of Mexico

Las Cruces, May 30, 2018 (Issuewire.com) - Award-winning wildlife journalist Chester Moore has come across two interesting reports of alleged sea snakes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea snakes are not supposed to be in the Gulf as they are native to Pacific waters.

I got a reports a couple of years back and then sort of filed in the X category for review later on down the road, Moore said.

Then I spoke with someone who told me about catching a big diamondback rattlesnake near High Island, TX. He said this as he brought me a king snake for my collection and we spent an hour talking about serpents. And just as he was done relating the story of the rattler, he dropped a bombshell.

That bombshell was a sea snake sighting that matched the same species as the previous report and was only a short distance from the other sighting.

He reported seeing the snake swimming around a rig that he had paddled his kayak to on a calm day.

Once again there are supposed to be no sea snakes in Texas or any Gulf waters for that matter, but some believe it is possible the snakes could reach the body of water through ship ballasts.

There is a possible candidate for this sighting that is not a sea snake and we are investigating that as well and you can read about it in the story at The Wildlife Journalist® but we are soliciting reports from anyone who has any potential sea snake sightings in the Gulf or Caribbean, Moore said.

We appreciate any information.
