Emerson Showcases Grid Technologies at NEMA Smart Grid Event

With the U.S. Department of Energy assigning $4.5 billion for Smart Grid investment as part of the federal government’s economic stimulus plan, Emerson (NYSE: EMR) is in Washington, D.C., today to demonstrate its commitment to a Smart Grid.

Emerson is showcasing its innovative technologies at the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as part of a NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) event designed to present the latest grid technologies and spotlight the companies that will play a vital role in the development of a Smart Grid.

The Emerson businesses participating in the event include Emerson Network Power and Emerson Process Management. Emerson is showcasing distributed generation and efficient consumption technologies as they relate to the Smart Grid initiative. On the generation side, Emerson Process Management is showcasing control systems that automate electric utility plants and optimize equipment performance, emissions compliance and overall unit efficiency. Meanwhile, Liebert precision cooling, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and monitoring systems and ASCO inbound power switching and control equipment from Emerson Network Power help manage energy consumption more efficiently.

“As a global technology leader, Emerson is uniquely positioned to help guide this complete overhaul of the nation’s traditional power grid. Most experts agree that a Smart Grid would enable power generation to be linked closely with consumption, allowing end users and utilities to work together to monitor usage and make smart decisions about power needs and consumption,” said Craig W. Ashmore, Senior Vice President-Planning and Development, Emerson. “Emerson has significant experience and expertise with the application of advanced monitoring, metering, control and communication technologies that enable better control of electric power generation and consumption.”

NEMA, a trade association for the electrical manufacturing industry, has approximately 450 member companies that manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end-use of electricity. NEMA members are leading the way in Smart Grid technologies by encouraging investment in the national electricity grid and developing new product standards.
