Celanese Sustainability Report Details Industry-Leading Commitment to Safety, Health and the Environment

Celanese Corp. (NYSE:CE), a leading global, integrated chemical company, today released its 2008 Sustainability Report, which details the company’s industry-leading commitment to safety, health and the environment across its worldwide operations. This year’s report also provides a glimpse into best practices driven by the company’s employees around the world.

“Celanese’s collective effort to advance the company’s sustainability measures confirms our ongoing commitment to environmental health and safety at our global facilities,” said David Weidman, Celanese chairman and chief executive officer. “Sustainability is embedded in our company’s culture, and we believe it is an economic, environmental and social prerequisite for continued commercial success.”

Weidman, who will take over in January 2009 as the Chairman of the American Chemistry Council, the largest chemical industry association in the U.S., noted: “Celanese’s environmental, health and safety efforts go far beyond regulatory compliance. From industry-leading safety practices, to reducing natural resource usage, to driving sustainability through our innovative products, we demonstrate our culture of excellence and our commitment to this business imperative.”

Safety Leadership

Celanese takes seriously the responsibility to protect its employees, local communities in which it operates, and equipment and facilities. The company works towards the goal of zero incidents and zero defects. Since 2004, Celanese has advanced its safety performance to be in the top 10 percent of its industry peers.

The company’s sites around the world demonstrate a commitment to safety, and the report details examples including the achievements of its Florence, Kentucky, site, which recently celebrated seven years – 2.6 million hours of consecutive operations – with no lost time injuries. In addition, employees in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, have worked more than 4.9 million hours without a safety incident.

Environmental Protection

Celanese has set aggressive sustainability goals for 2010, and has made great strides in meeting and exceeding these goals, such as reducing air emissions by 30 percent and reducing energy intensity by 20 percent, which will be one of the most aggressive reductions in the industry. As of 2007, the company had nearly reached its goal for reducing waste volume by 25 percent and is now striving for 40 percent waste reduction by 2010. Celanese has also reduced green house gas emissions by 30 percent globally since 2005.

Energy Reduction Commitment

A key milestone in Celanese’s sustainability efforts is the company’s energy intensity reduction commitment. At the beginning of the decade, a goal was set to reduce the energy intensity Celanese uses to make its products by 20 percent by 2005. Celanese exceeded that goal with a reduction of 22 percent. Continuing with this commitment, Celanese has set a goal of reducing its energy index by an additional 20 percent as part of the company’s 2010 sustainability goals. At present, Celanese is on track to exceed this milestone. Achieving this goal will result in an energy index reduction of more than 35 percent by 2010.

Leadership in China

Open since September 2007, Celanese’s Nanjing, China, integrated chemical complex is the company’s most technologically advanced, energy- and waste-efficient complex in the world. The site has completed more than 10 million work hours without a lost-time injury. The Nanjing complex exceeds China’s current regulations and serves as a flagship of operational excellence in the Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park. A centerpiece of the company’s sustainability efforts, the Nanjing facility’s processes have been transitioned to other sites worldwide to further contribute to Celanese’s customers’ end-products, many of which are used to solve global sustainability challenges.

“The value chemistry brings to safety, health, the economy and the environment – fundamental elements of human life – is beyond measure,” said Weidman. “Advanced technological achievements; advancements in medicine, science and exploration; energy discovery and conservation; and protecting and preserving our environmental resources, all are made possible through chemistry. Celanese is proud to contribute to our industry’s success.”
