Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that VTR Global Com S.A. (VTR), a leading communications service provider in Chile, has deployed the CN 4200® RS FlexSelect™ Advanced Services Platform throughout its Santiago network. The operator is utilizing the CN 4200’s reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) functionality in its metro network infrastructure to enhance the delivery of its triple play offering, which includes sophisticated digital TV, like video on demand (VOD) services, combined with voice and data access for residential customers. The Ciena solution was implemented by ADEXUS, Chile's largest systems integrator and a strategic resale partner in Ciena’s BizConnect program.
VTR, majority-owned by North American company Liberty Global, is Chile’s largest multi-channel television and residential broadband Internet provider and Chile’s second largest provider of residential telephony services, reaching 1.1 million subscribers. In response to increasing bandwidth requirements driven by continued penetration of high-capacity broadband internet and digital TV services such as HDTV, VTR made a significant upgrade to its Santiago network by deploying Ciena’s 16-slot CN 4200 RS with ROADM functionality. Ciena’s hybrid ROADM approach allows VTR to optimize bandwidth utilization by combining ‘electronic ROADM’ (eROADM)—sub-wavelength grooming capability based on ITU G.709 Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology—with optical ROADM for enhanced network flexibility. This solution offers VTR an architecture with reconfigurability at both the individual service and individual wavelength levels, enabling the rapid provisioning of video service capacity to meet unexpected demand and allowing changes to the network without affecting other wavelengths and services.
“With more than half of our one million subscribers now requiring broadband services in addition to cable, VTR is committed to supporting the digitalization of Chilean homes by offering advanced service bundles, superior quality and improved coverage,” said Hernán Benavides, Engineering Manager at VTR. “As VTR continues to expand, we seek optical infrastructure leaders to help deliver a new generation of bundled services with the highest standards. This agreement with Ciena brings our Santiago metro network to the forefront of that digital conversion.”
Video services provided by operators like VTR require high network availability to ensure service quality. The agility of Ciena’s CN 4200 ROADM enables mesh connectivity for any-to-any routing, ensuring high availability and shared protection paths to maximize network efficiency and resource utilization. CN 4200 ROADM’s redundancy and protection schemes have been put to the test since being installed in the VTR network, and have maintained 100 percent service availability to all subscribers.
“VTR’s deployment of our hybrid ROADM solution provides the underpinning for its advanced services delivery strategy,” said Mike Aquino, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Ciena. “IP itself is not a transport-grade technology, so many carriers like VTR that are at the forefront of delivering IP-based digital services like broadcast video and Voice-over-IP in addition to Ethernet business services are turning to Ciena to help mitigate their service risk through the service-aware networking capabilities the CN 4200 provides at multiple network layers.”
About Ciena’s CN 4200 ROADM
Ciena’s CN 4200 RS uniquely combines wavelength ROADM with G.709/OTN-based sub-wavelength grooming and switching to provide equivalent agility for all services running at data rates from 10 Mbps up to 40 Gbps. Traditional ROADM solutions, designed to work only at the wavelength level, do not address grooming at the sub-wavelength level. This lack of granularity limits efficiency and reduces the cost benefit when network operators need to support both 10G and 40G wavelength and sub-wavelength (below 10 Gbps) services on the same network.
