KCS Subsidiary Achieves Responsible Care(R) Management System Certification

Kansas City Southern (KCS) (NYSE: KSU) today announced that its primary U.S. subsidiary, The Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCSR), has achieved Responsible Care® Management System (RCMS) certification. On behalf of KCSR, general director environmental quality, Chester Culley, received the certificate today at the 2008 Responsible Care® Conference & Expo in Miami, Fla.

KCSR is proud to be among the three U.S. railroads to have achieved this prestigious certification, said Michael Haverty, KCS chairman and chief executive officer. It is an affirmative demonstration of our commitment to safety, the quality of service to our customers, and to being responsible stewards for the protection of the environment and the communities in which we operate.

KCSR has been a Responsible Care® partner company since 1999. In 2002, the American Chemistry Council adopted the management system approach for implementing Responsible Care® in the U.S., including mandatory, independent, third-party verification. KCSR achieved RCMS certification by formalizing its Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Management System.

RCMS provides a structured framework for assessing needs, setting specific performance goals and sharing information with employees, contractors and the public. RCMS includes requirements for policy and leadership; planning; implementation; operation and accountability; performance measurement and corrective action; and management system review.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., KCS is a transportation holding company that has railroad investments in the U.S., Mexico and Panama. Its primary U.S. holding is KCSR, serving the central and south central U.S. Its international holdings include Kansas City Southern de Mexico, S.A. de C.V., serving northeastern and central Mexico and the port cities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Tampico and Veracruz, and a 50 percent interest in Panama Canal Railway Company, providing ocean-to-ocean freight and passenger service along the Panama Canal. KCS' North American rail holdings and strategic alliances are primary components of a NAFTA Railway system, linking the commercial and industrial centers of the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
