Cory Powers Explains the Benefits of Group Exercise for All Ages and Walks of Life

By: Get News

Cory Powers, the General Manager of Operations and Sales for sports store Home Court Advantage, has long been an exercise enthusiast, encouraging clients and colleagues alike to take time out of their busy schedules to get the physical exercise they need to stay healthy, happy, and fit.

He offers insight into why group exercise can be a great option for adults of all ages and walks of life. His advice on the topic can help those trying to get into the habit of exercising regularly and those who do exercise regularly but could benefit from variety in their routine.

Cory Powers explains that while all forms of exercise are great, group exercise options offer some benefits that one would not gain from exercising on their own. Added motivation is one such benefit and can be important for someone struggling to make exercise a part of their daily routine. It can be easy to skip the early morning or evening jog or gym visit if one doesn't feel up to it; however, it's a lot harder for a person to skip a group sport if others are counting on that person to show up at a predetermined time. Fellow players can also motivate a person to stretch their skill set and teach new skills to optimize their exercise time. He also explains that the social aspect of exercising with other people cannot be ignored. Socialization, like exercise, is good for one's mental health as it can lower one's risk of depression, improve cognitive skills, and increase one's sense of happiness and well-being. Improved mental health also positively impacts physical health, as depression can cause physical health problems ranging from insomnia and headaches to inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease.

There are multiple group sports one can pick from, Cory Powers points out. The benefits of group exercise remain the same whether one picks soccer, football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, or another group sport. However, he does note that a person who is getting on in years has not been in the habit of getting regular exercise and has a chronic health condition should pick a group exercise with care. Consulting a medical professional before starting a new exercise regimen can also be a wise idea to prevent problems such as sprains and broken bones.

At the same time, the effort it takes to choose a safe group exercise is well worth it, as exercising with other people is not only an excellent way to get (or remain) physically fit but also provides opportunities to make new friends, spend time with current friends, learn new skills, and boost one's self-esteem. Moreover, group exercise does not necessarily have to become one's primary form of exercise, as even occasional group games can offer great mental and physical health benefits.

Powers believes that whether as a group or on one’s own, maintaining a regular exercise routine is essential to good health, energy, and cultivating a positive outlook. Whichever method people choose, finding the right routine is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle
