What Chinese modernization brings to the world?

Beijing, China / TimesNewswire /  March 19, 2023 – Chinese modernization creates a new form of human advancement and provides an important source of inspiration for the world, especially developing countries, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on the sidelines of the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature, on March 7.

CGTN presented serial activities “Chinese Modernization and the World”, including a TV forum “Modernization Toward Common Prosperity for All People” on March 13. Political figures, think tank scholars, and China experts from around the world hailed that Chinese modernization benefits the whole world, which is worthy of reference for other countries.

Common prosperity for the world

Chinese modernization is one of common prosperity for all, Qin said, adding that modernization should not serve the interests of only a few countries or individuals.

Li Yong, chief researcher at D&C Think, believes China has a clear plan for the realization of common prosperity which includes all people in development, taking the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a good example.

“By bringing vitality to the economic development of every country, enabling China and partners to thrive in cooperation, it ultimately helps achieve common prosperity in all of BRI’s partner countries,” Li said.

This year marks the 10th anniversary since China proposed the BRI, which has created some 420,000 jobs in countries along the routes and helped lift nearly 40 million people out of poverty over the past decade. Over three-fourths of the countries in the world and 32 international organizations have participated in the BRI.

Marco Fernandes, a Brazilian researcher with the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, noted that China’s route to modernization improved its citizens’ livelihoods and inspired many developing countries in the Global South to see that there’s an alternative way to grow.

China not only funded the building of Argentina’s Atucha III nuclear power plant but also provided the home-developed Hualong One technology, allowing Argentina to have the technology to build more plants, he said.

China’s common prosperity provides opportunities for all people to join the economic development. It is a proactive strategy that tries to give a fair share of the interests of economic development to people in all regions and areas, which is worth learning for many, including Europe and the U.S., said Michael Powers, Zurich Insurance Group Chair Professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management.

Peaceful development

Hussein Askary, the West Asia coordinator for the Schiller Institute in Sweden, said the BRI and the Global Security Initiative have redefined the concept of global development, security and governance.

Referring to the recent resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, he said China’s diplomatic concept based on multilateralism helps two countries that have cut diplomatic relations for years to work together again.

Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions within two months after the China-mediated talks in Beijing on March 10.

China’s diplomatic model is key to solving many of today’s global geopolitical crises, Askary said.

“Chinese modernization is committed to peaceful development, not pursued through war, colonization, or plundering. It is dedicated to peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefit,” said Qin.

After centuries of Western intervention in Latin America, only China has helped the region’s infrastructure development, and China’s foreign policy aimed at encouraging win-win cooperation and mutually beneficial development is well recognized by Latin American countries, said Ben Norton, a Nicaraguan journalist and foreign diplomacy expert.
