We Are One Blood Donation Campaign

“We Are One” volunteer group rolled up their sleeves to overcome blood shortage and to strengthen the community safety net

Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Dec 5, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - Every winter, communities are faced with blood shortages. However, at beginning of winter this year 70,000 young volunteers completed donating blood - marking it the largest group blood donation ever performed.

As the blood shortage crisis continued from COVID-19, the youth volunteer group "We Are One" donated blood with the goal of having 70,000 people donate from August 27th to November 27th - the beginning of winter - said, Director Jun-su Hong. During the campaign, a total of 73,807 people successfully donated blood over a span of 85 days, and 100,360 people overall participated in the blood donation campaign -- making it the largest group blood donation ever.

"We Are One" planned a blood donation campaign last summer in response to a national blood shortage. This shortage only worsened as the COVID-19 crisis was prolonged and blood donor numbers continued to decrease. To prepare for the winter, Chuseok holidays, and summer vacation seasons when blood supply is usually reduced, We Are One member actively donated blood with the goal of completing 70,000 blood donations by November 2022.

This campaign was conducted at blood centers in 17 cities across South Korea. "We Are One" members across the country actively donated blood, and as planned, 70,000 blood donations were completed and exceeded by November 27th.

In order to make it possible for such a large number of people to effectively donate blood in a short period of time, "We Are One" focused on matching the schedule of the blood centers and donors. The donors themselves also paid special attention to their health to avoid being disqualified for blood donation and so be able to participate in fighting the national blood shortage.

In fact, in order to achieve the goal of '70,000 blood donations completed before winter', about 100,000 "We Are One" members across the country visited blood donation centers over the last three months and joined the campaign.

Hong Joon-su, the director of "We Are One", said, "Blood donation is the only means to save the lives of patients who need a blood transfusion and it is a noble service. We thank the members who participated in blood donation with a clear sense of calling to practice life sharing. "We Are One" is committed to overcoming the blood supply shortage and we will continue to participate in blood donation in the future to strengthen the community safety net."

"We Are One", a youth volunteer group, was launched on July 30th as a volunteer group composed of young people from Shincheonji Church of Jesus.
