Borrego has completed construction of 15 projects totaling 96 MW of solar and 50 MW/169 MWh of energy storage for AES Corporation in Massachusetts and New York.

The storage portfolio is Borrego's largest build for a single customer to date.

The solar-plus-storage systems range in size from 1.6 MW to 12 MW (solar) and 910 KW/1.7 MWh to 9 MW/17 MWh (storage).

Subscribe today to the all-new Factor This! podcast from Renewable Energy World. This podcast is designed specifically for the solar industry and is available wherever you get your podcasts.

Listen to the latest episode, on shaping the grid of the future to support renewable energy, featuring Jim Walsh, GE's head of grid software. This special edition of the Factor This! podcast was recorded live from DISTRIBUTECH and POWERGEN International in Dallas last May.

When fully interconnected, the portfolio will collectively generate enough clean electricity annually to power roughly 10,885 homes and offset 82,659 metric tons of climate-warming carbon dioxide emissions.

The projects are among the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm's first DC-coupled solar-plus-storage installations.

“Being an early adopter of energy storage and solar-plus-storage technologies has not been without its challenges, but the completion of the AES portfolio has made it all worthwhile,” said John duPont, vice president of solutions at Borrego.

The coupled solar+storage systems allow the projects to participate in the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target program and access the NY Value of Distributed Energy Resource tariff. The projects will also participate in wholesale markets.

Taken together, the DC-coupled solar+storage systems are expected to generate up to 30% additional energy output from the same interconnection cost as a standalone solar project.

Earlier in June, Borrego announced that it had spun off and sold its solar and energy storage development business to maximize its focus as an EPC.

Energy transition investment firm ECP will take over Borrego's development business, staff, and project pipeline of over 8.4 GW of solar and 6.4 GW/25 GWh of energy storage.

Borrego currently manages the performance of 1.4 GW and over 1,000 solar operating assets.
