ENERGIE AG Data to Improve Network Efficiency with Ciena's CN 4200 Platform

Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that ENERGIE AG Data will deploy the CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform and ON-Center® Network and Service Management Suite to improve multi-site connectivity between ENERGIE AG Oberösterreich, one of the largest utility companies in Austria, and its local subsidiaries. ENERGIE AG Data will also utilize Cienas CN 4200 to deliver Gigabit Ethernet and storage services to business customers in Upper Austria, when the division launches its enterprise and wholesale offerings. Datentechnik Austria GmbH, a leading systems integrator and recently-appointed Ciena partner in Austria, will implement the solution.

ENERGIE AG Data is the telecom services arm of ENERGIE AG, which is a leading infrastructure group in Austria that owns 12 separate companies, specializing in energy supply and distribution to business and private customers. The Group also offers gas supply, water and wastewater treatment, and waste disposal, in addition to telecommunications services.

A key element of Cienas FlexSelect Architecture a flexible hardware-based, software-driven approach to transitioning to next-generation, converged networks the CN 4200 is a service-oriented, next-generation WDM transport and aggregation platform. The CN 4200 will enable ENERGIE AG Data to improve the efficiency and performance of the Groups private optical network, which connects more than 1,400 sites throughout Upper Austria, as the company begins to migrate its current SDH-based network toward WDM platforms to support the growth of advanced data services.

Cienas 4200 platform, combined with Datentechniks skills and expertise, is the ideal solution to optimize our network capacity and efficiency and support new services. As the CN 4200 supports multiple services on a single wavelength, well be able to get the most out of our network investment as well as reduce the cost of running it, said Dr. Manfred Litzlbauer, managing director at ENERGIE AG Oberösterreich Data. The CN 4200 is also a very flexible solution because ports can be configured remotely to support any optical protocol as needed and different customers can be managed individually across the network. This puts us in a better position to launch new telecom services more quickly and cost-effectively once we enter the business market.

The CN 4200 leverages ITU G.709 OTN standards-based technology to enable grooming and aggregation of multiple service types on a single wavelength, providing ENERGIE AG with the most efficient wavelength utilization possible. This technology allows network operators to aggregate up to 64 different service types onto a single 10G wavelength or 16 services onto a single 2.5G wavelength. Each individual service, including SONET/SDH, Ethernet, storage and video, is carried with full transparency and performance management data, and can be delivered at any location on the network for optimal wavelength utilization.

ENERGIE AG Data will also use Cienas ON-Center Network and Service Management Suite to more efficiently and proactively manage its network, including proactive outage detection and identification of customers or services affected by network troubles. In particular, the ON-Center Service Layer Manager (SLM) will allow ENERGIE AG Data to offer enterprise and wholesale customers active reports on the health and status of the network as well as Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance.

ENERGIE AG is one of a growing number of utility companies across central and Eastern Europe that are starting to leverage their private network infrastructure to offer telecom services to the enterprise market, said Francois Locoh-Donou, vice president and general manager, Ciena EMEA. The 4200 continues to meet the needs of this emerging sector with support for virtually all service types and functionalities, enabling service providers to roll out new services faster and with less infrastructure investment.

Designed to deliver performance-grade Ethernet services, Cienas CN 4200 family includes the two-slot CN 4200 MC for edge-optimized optical services from the customer premises, the four-slot CN 4200 for aggregating services onto rings, and the 16-slot CN 4200 RS for aggregation, grooming and routing of traffic at major network aggregation points such as a video head-end applications. The platform offers the unique benefit of universal line cards with individual user-programmable ports to deliver TDM, Ethernet and storage services at any speed on any available port, and ITU G.709 OTN for service transparency. Cienas CN 4200 family also supports remote service provisioning and management through Ciena's ON-Center® Network and Service Management Suite that offers network operators a unique set of tools for efficient service deployment, proactive network management and service level management.

More than 100 organizations around the world, including leading service providers, enterprises, government agencies and research and education networks, utilize Cienas CN 4200 platform for its flexibility, ease of deployment and significant capital and operational savings.
