New Data Analysis Reveals States where Patients with Diabetes are Successfully Managing their Health Condition

By: Get News

A new data analysis of patients with diabetes has identified the states where patients are doing the most to proactively manage their diabetes.

In an unexpected twist, researchers found a strong correlation among states with the highest rates of diabetes and their residents low engagement levels with mobile solutions that help manage their conditions.

The analysis, which was conducted by the digital health company, Kilo Health, looked at more than 120,000 users on the diabetes management app, Klinio. Their team looked at the total number of Klinio users and the total number of adults with diabetes or pre-diabetes in each state.

Their researchers found 9 of the 10 states with the highest number of Klinio users also had lower rates of diabetes. In addition, the analysis found 9 of the 10 states with the highest rates of diabetes also had the lowest rate of engagement.

Dr. Braden Barnett, practicing endocrinologist and Medical Advisor to Klinio, says the finding suggests mobile solutions can help lower the overall rates of diabetes across the US.

“The conclusion is pretty clear: if a state has a high number of patients using mobile solutions, their overall rate of diabetes drops,” said Barnett. “At the same time, if patients aren’t using a mobile app to manage their condition, rates go up in the state. This shows the power of education and how states can make a difference in their diabetes rates by encouraging residents to use mobile solutions.”

The analysis found California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina all had the highest rates of engagement on Kilinio. Only Florida showed up on the list of states with the highest rates of diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Nearly 10 percent of all Klinio users in the US live in California, which has lower rates of diabetes.

One in 3 Americans have prediabetes, and one in 5 Americans will have full-on diabetes by 2025, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

States with the highest percentage of adults with diabetes in 2020 are West Virginia (15.7 percent), Alabama (15 percent), and Mississippi (14.6 percent), according to the CDC. None of these states had high rates of engagement with the diabetes management app.

Dr. Braden Barnett says this new research can be used as a guide for diabetics who want to take the initiative to fight their condition.

How Patients Can Better Manage Their Diabetes

For those who want to begin proactively taking on their diabetes, Barnett has a few tips for patients who want to manage their condition.

  • Stay Physically Active. Exercising plays a huge role in naturally reversing some of the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes. Regular exercise helps to control blood glucose levels, benefits your heart, lowers blood pressure, reduces harmful LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, raises healthy HDL cholesterol, strengthens your muscles, reduces weight, and most importantly, increases your body’s sensitivity to insulin. He recommends starting with moderate intense physical activity like going for a brisk walk for 15-20 minutes a day.

  • Lower Blood Sugar Levels. Hyperglycemia or high blood glucose is common with diabetes and occurs when the body’s blood sugar levels go over the normal limit. Symptoms of this condition include excessive thirst, increased hunger, and frequent need to urinate. Three simple ways to lower blood sugar levels and reduce some of these symptoms would be to use fast-acting insulin, participate in light exercise, and continually check blood sugar levels through apps like Klinio.

  • Eat Balanced Diet. The best way to reverse diabetes symptoms is to eat healthier. Patients with type 2 diabetes should always choose foods that have a low glycemic index (foods high in fiber, protein or fats) like vegetables and protein such as fish, lentils and beans. A balanced diet can also include fruit, whole grains, nuts, and low-fat dairy products. Foods with a high glycemic index raise blood sugar levels. Avoid processed foods high in sugars, carbohydrates or animal fat (sweets, pastries, chips, desserts, breads, pasta and crackers).

About Klinio – Diabetes Management App

The independent organization, Validation Institute, recently validated findings by Kilo Health that found patients with type-2 diabetes who used Klinio for a minimum of 19 days over 2.5 months were twice as likely to reduce their absolute HbA1c value by 0.59 percent.

The data also found users were twice as likely to achieve clinically meaningful improvement than users who had fewer logins. A change of 0.5 is considered a meaningful change in a person’s health status and is accepted by the Food and Drug Administration.

The Klinio app is available to download for free on iOS and Android
