The National Youth French Horn Ensemble summer school takes place this August in Cheltenham, England. The leading event for young horn players with coaching from principal orchestral musicians.

Bristol, United Kingdom - January 20, 2022 /PressCable/

The National Youth French Horn Ensemble UK third summer school takes place this August with leading orchestral players as coaches.

The National Youth French Horn Ensemble (NYFHE) meets again for its summer school in Cheltenham from August 21st to 26th. Principal horn players from some of the UK’s top orchestras will be teaching the tricks of their trade to the best young students in the country on the brink of musical careers.

This is the third year for NYFHE, having first launched with a virtual course during the difficult time of lockdowns in 2020. This year all are looking forward to meeting and playing together live.

NYFHE is the only UK course concentrating specifically on music for the french horn. Whilst general orchestral courses can be of great benefit the organisers believe the intensive concentration on a single instrument gives players much greater value during the week.

The course will involve structured lessons from professional orchestral players and teachers for individual technique. The leading coaches are Tim Jackson, principal horn of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Tim Thorpe, principal horn of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Students will benefit from their years of experience in the professional music world.

The two Tims are supported by Tom Taffinder who has extensive experience as a freelance horn player in professional concerts and theatre. Tom now delivers performance health workshops for young musicians across the country, working closely with organisations such as the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain.

A separate but simultaneous course for The National Youth Percussion Orchestra will also be held. At the end of the two entirely separate events, musicians will come together to perform two new works composed specifically for the 20 percussionists and 16 horn players. The event will take place at the Cheltenham Ladies College, beginning at 10.30 a.m. on the morning of the 21st.

The event does have strict requirements, including a Grade 8 standard of playing or higher, though a certificate of proof is not required. Applicants will also require a large amount of stamina, as they will be playing for most of five days.

This year the opportunity to join the ensemble is being opened up to those who are studying at conservatoires and the organisers say it will truly become an inspiration to young horn players the length and breadth of the country.

Musicians between the ages of 14 and 22 are invited to apply, though applicants of other ages may be considered. Included in the application should be contact details, experience level with the French horn, and the repertoire currently being studied. The application should also include some details about the musician’s ambitions in upcoming years, and the reasons they would like to join the NYFHE course.
