Commonly known as mountain arnica or wolf’s bane, Arnica montana is found in Europe and North America. Humans have used the flowers of this plant for medicinal purposes for over 600 years, says Koulouris. This ancient natural remedy has been used to treat everything from muscle spasms to arthritis.

Koulouris also mentions a randomized study of 204 people with hand osteoarthritis. According to the study, writes Koulouris, the efficiency of arnica gel was comparable to ibuprofen gel. Also, no noticeable side effects were reported. This study was published in Rheumatology International in 2007. In another study conducted in 2002, arnica gel was well-tolerated by a high percentage of participants with knee osteoarthritis.

He also notes that anyone with gout can apply Arnica as a cream, liniment, tincture, salve or ointment. He recommends using it topically because oral administration of Arnica may lead to serious side effects.

“Taking Arnica by mouth is never advisable without medical supervision. This can very easily lead to dizziness, tremors, and heart-related abnormalities. It may also cause vomiting by irritating the mucous membranes. In the worst case, taking Arnica in large doses can even cause death,” Koulouris says. “Also, if you are allergic or hypersensitive to Arnica, please avoid it at any cost. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should never use Arnica.”
