After 40 years of business, Lusk Eye Specialists founder James Lusk, M.D., and sons Bryan Lusk, M.D., and Jeffrey Lusk, M.D., are proud to serve the practice’s 100,000th new patient on Aug. 27.

During the same year that eye surgeon, James Lusk, MD founded Lusk Eye Specialists 40 years ago, he and his sons, Bryan Lusk, MD and Jeffrey Lusk, MD are preparing to welcome 65-year-old Carolyn Richmond as their 100,000th new patient into the practice on Friday, August 27th at 10 a.m.
“When my wife, Catherine and I moved to Shreveport and opened Lusk Eye Specialists in 1981, it never occurred to us that we would one day welcome our 100,000th new patient into the practice,” said Dr. James Lusk. “Every day has been a blessing to come to work and an honor to care for patients across the ARK-LA-TEX. It’s rewarding to know that our passion for treating patients like family has been well-received by the local community.”
Ms. Richmond has been coming to Lusk Eye Specialists for years, but not as a patient. “I’ve been driving my good friend, Sharon, to Lusk Eye Specialists from Coushatta for years, but I had never made an appointment with them,” she said. “And then this time, Sharon told me, ‘Lusk Eye Specialists are the best, so you should have your eyes checked sometime.’ So, I walked to the front desk while she was being seen and set up an appointment…then they got me real good,” she said with a laugh.
She’s referring to the moment when the staff and doctors immediately pulled her to the back of the office and surprised her with a huge ‘100,000th New Patient’ welcome sign on the wall. “I’m still in shock,” she said. “I never expected anything like that at a doctor’s office. They made me feel very special and now I can’t wait for my actual appointment on Friday!”
Ms. Richmond will be greeted by all three Lusk surgeons and staff members as they welcome her on this historic medical moment for the Lusk family. “I can’t wait to meet Ms. Richmond and tell her how very proud we are of her for choosing our family of eye care professionals for her vision care,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lusk. “I’ll also thank her for driving her friend, Sharon, to our practice for the past 3 years.”
When Ms. Richmond enters the practice at 10 a.m. on August 27th, she will be greeted with celebratory fanfare by all the doctors and staff. She will also be given flowers, a special cake and a new flat screen television. To make other patients feel equally welcomed and special on this day, they will all receive cupcakes and a special memorable gift.
“I didn’t get to celebrate my recent 65th birthday, so this will be like a big birthday party to me,” said Ms. Richmond. “I’m also very impressed that Dr. Lusk and his sons have actually seen 100,000 new patients over the years. That’s quite an honor and accomplishment.” When asked why she’s been driving her friend to Lusk Eye Specialists from Coushatta all these years, she simply said, “Because they’re the best and that’s what I want for Sharon and me!”
Dr. Jeffrey Lusk and Dr. Bryan Lusk we’re equally impressed that 100,000 new patients have trusted Lusk Eye Specialists over the years to care for something as precious as their vision. “When Bryan and I learned that collectively we’ve seen 100,000 new patients in the practice over the years, we really couldn’t believe it,”
Dr. Jeffrey Lusk said. “We obviously see patients every day in the practice, but we’ve always focused on the ‘quality’ of patient care and not the quantity.”
Dr. Bryan said that 100,000 new patients is indeed a significant milestone in the practice, but he’s not surprised by the number. “Dad taught us very early on in our careers to treat patients like family,” he said. “And we Lusks don’t like to sit around, but prefer to keep our hands busy. When you have patients that you know and treat like one of your own, it really is rewarding on many levels.”
After 40 years in practice, Dr. James Lusk still enjoys seeing patients and performing the latest breakthroughs in cataract and refractive surgery. “People keep asking me when I’m going to retire, but I’m having too much fun seeing patients and helping restore their vision,” he said. “It’s been an incredible 40 years and we’ve enjoyed meeting each and every one of our 100,000 new patients we’ve seen over the years. I’d just like to say ‘Thank You’ to all of them who have faith and confidence in our abilities to help them enjoy a lifetime of the best possible vision.”
