Leading NJ College Arts And Communication Program Announces Journalism Job Placements And Internships In Nation's Top Media Companies

Alumni and students from The College Of New Jersey's Journalism And Professional Writing program are landing jobs and internships at nationally-leading media companies.

EWING, NJ, August 05, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Recent Journalism and Professional Writing (JPW) department alumni and current students from the School of the Arts and Communication at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) are getting job placements and internships at some of the nation's top media companies.

One alumna, Victoria Giardina, graduated May 2021 and landed a position as a commerce journalist at the New York Post. "TCNJ's JPW program was a springboard to working at newsrooms like CNN, Business Insider, and New York Post," explains Giardina. "Its emphasis on digital storytelling and facts-first reporting helped me land my job right after graduation!" Giardina also worked as an intern with The Dr. Oz Show and WebMD while attending TCNJ.

In addition to preparing students for writing careers after graduation, the JPW department empowers students to pursue internships with prominent companies. Camille Furst, Class of 2022, is an intern with CNN. She remarks, "Learning about all the facets of journalism from my classes and The Signal, the student newspaper, prepared me to take on my previous internship at NBC Washington and my current internship with CNN's national assignment desk, also known as the National Content Center."

Beyond traditional journalism roles, the JPW department prepares students for positions in content writing, copywriting, public relations and social media management. Notable alumni have achieved senior positions at renowned brands like personal finance company NerdWallet and international beauty product retailer L'Occitane.

Kathleen Webber, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism and Professional Writing, expands on the strategies faculty leverage to encourage students to pursue successful careers. She says, "Our pedagogical approach in the Journalism and Professional Writing program at TCNJ helps students become critical thinkers and teaches them reporting, interviewing and writing skills, as well as storytelling using data, audio, photos and video. These educational experiences prepare them for positions in journalism, marketing, public relations, communications and social media."

The Journalism and Professional Writing curriculum provides intensive instruction in news and feature writing and editing, as well as corequisite training in ethics, media law and multimedia and digital skills. JPW offers three separate minors: Journalism, Professional Writing, and Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism. All of these learning paths can be strategically combined with majors or minors in fields including communication studies, interactive multimedia, history, international studies, psychology and marketing.

The Journalism and Professional Writing major is interdisciplinary, offering a broad range of courses in writing and other study areas, empowering students to design educational roadmaps corresponding to individual goals and passions. JPW prepares young people for careers in journalism, professional writing, editing, publishing, communications, public relations, law, management or any other professional area that requires excellent written and oral communication skills.

The School of the Arts and Communication is TCNJ's interdisciplinary arts, performance, music, multimedia and communication studies branch. Proud to provide students with a top-tier liberal arts education, the school is an inclusive community of dedicated teaching professionals focused on preparing young minds to flourish as productive citizens in a complex world.
