Solar Company Breaks New Ground in Sustainable Investment By Using Crowdfunding

As more investment funds are putting their money into ethical funds, GoSun, a solar start-up, is breaking new ground in sustainable investing by launching a viral crowdfunding campaign.

Long-term investing is a smart financial strategy, but for decades the end goal of the industry was centered around the rate of return and nothing but the rate of return, regardless of what sort of businesses were actually being supported. That’s changing, as more investment funds are putting their money into ethical funds. These are large and small funds that return great rates but focus on technologies and infrastructure that make the Planet better, such as renewable energy or sustainability initiatives.

The numbers back up this trend. Almost $140 billion was invested in solar in 2018, along with $134 billion in wind energy, according to a UN Global Status Report. Impact investing has grown from $50 billion in 2009 to $500 billion today. Although this is only a slice of the $61 trillion that makes up the global equity market, impact investing has spread among such instruments as equity, debt, real assets, and loan guarantees.

Investing in large-scale portfolios isn’t the only way to start with impact investing. Many online companies now have funding platforms for renewable energy projects and cleantech companies.

One of the best-known platforms for small-scale impact investing is StartEngine. It facilitates investment in early-stage startup businesses, including renewable energy companies. StartEngine works with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and others. It operates at a higher scale than Kickstarter or Indiegogo, allowing bigger businesses to get their liftoff.

Arguably the most successful company of all time to run equity crowdfunding campaigns is GoSun. This is a Cincinnati homegrown company that literally started in an old garage and has now shipped over 100,000 solar products to customers in over 70 countries. GoSun makes a variety of solar products including breakthrough solar ovens, solar refrigerators, solar power generators, and solar water purification systems.

Last year, GoSun saw revenue growth by 109%, with sales of $3.9 million on breakthrough solar products, and now they are raising funds to help scale and develop new products.

“We like to think of it as though we are giving people and our customers a chance to own a piece of the future.” Patrick Sherwin, CEO of GoSun says. “Now, thanks to Start Engine, the public can invest and own a part of small, start-up companies they believe in. We are a crowdfunded company so it makes a lot of sense to have customers become investors to fuel our rocket ship. We believe that GoSun provides a unique opportunity to get in on the Solar Boom.”

GoSun’s award-winning technology has been recognized by the likes of CES, FastCo. and the WhiteHouse for its breakthrough innovations. Recognizing the contribution that GoSun’s products make to eliminating global emissions, CES awarded GoSun with its Climate Change Innovation Award in 2019 and an Innovation award for its solar water purifier in 2020.

“Many investors are looking for a way to alleviate the problems of climate change. GoSun provides a unique opportunity because we provide several solutions to massive, global issues. Our technology can cook, cool, and charge off-grid, helping people become energy independent, resilient, reduce emissions, and have more fun,“ Sherwin stated.

With innovation at its core, in 2018 GoSun launched the first hybrid solar and electric oven, the Fusion through Kickstarter, allowing customers to cook at night. In 2020, the company launched a solar-powered water filter and sanitation system, the GoSun Flow, and in May will be introducing its newest product the Chillest, a solar-powered portable refrigerator and freezer that eliminates ice and can be completely powered by the Sun.

Supporting nonprofits around the world, GoSun also makes solar-powered lights and phone chargers for power outages and emergencies. Whether used in recreation or in times of need, all of GoSun’s products are designed so one never needs to go without cooking, cooling, light, or power.

Founded in 2016, GoSun has become the first consumer solar appliance manufacturer to break into mainstream markets centered around enjoying power, food, and drink while outdoors. GoSun’s breakthrough solar-powered technologies can cook, cool, light, power electronics and now, purify and deliver water.

These affordable products are all portable, more efficient, and free of harmful carbon emissions. It has established partnerships with companies and organizations including REI, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, the UN, Red Cross, and various NGOs.
