North Carolina Grandma and Her Axe Video Go Viral on TikTok

By: Issuewire

Raleigh, North Carolina Jun 3, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - In less than 48 hours, a video posted by a grandmother from North Carolina has garnered nearly 2 million views on TikTok.

Sixty-three-year-old Beverly Mahone, who uses the social media platform to help others build their vocabulary skills, decided to do a Show and Tell video to demonstrate and explain the difference between a real axe and the saying the word ask. In the video, you see her pretending to be chopping down a tree while vocalizing the differences in saying the two words.  Beverly says, "It's quite common to hear someone say 'ax' instead of 'ask' and it apparently was a pet peeve for many of my followers so that's why I decided to do the video."

The part-time college writing consultant says she decided to join the social media site Mother's Day weekend because of her 14-year-old grandson. Although she says she is pretty active on social media, the baby boomer grandma didn't see TikTok as a place for people in her age group because statistics show less than five percent of people over the age of 60 use TikTok compared to more than 60 percent between the ages of 10 and 29-years-old.  "As a result of the pandemic and virtual learning, I thought there might be a need for my vocabulary coaching but I wasn't sure so I asked my grandson what he thought and he said go for it!"

After three weeks, she has become a TikTok favorite as "Auntie Bev."  In addition to having 1.5 million views of her videos, she also has more than 130k followers. She is pleased to know she has been well-received by fellow TikTokers. So far, the comments have been overwhelmingly positive with followers saying things like:

Aunt Bev. out here helping me update my corporate email language. Thank you!

This is the voice I wish read books to me when I was a kid.

Love your word education. Please don't stop.

I freaking love Auntie Bev.! You go, girl!

How long will this grandmother remain on the social media platform? She says they will have to kick her off because she's happy to be offering something of value that doesn't include singing, dancing or cooking lessons.
