Conidia speak up about practicality of marine fuel testing kit

Conidia speak up about practicality of marine fuel testing kit and the adverse affects that diesel bug or microbial contamination has on fuel tanks in the industry

Egham, United Kingdom - May 19, 2021 /PressCable/

Earlier today Conidia Biosciences discussed marine fuel testing and how it’s imperative for boat owners to keep their engine in check.

A statistic posted by Ocean Sailor Magazine stated that up to a whopping 80% of breakdowns and failures on blue water cruising yachts alone are completely due to contaminated fuel.

The IMO 2020 regulations that have been put in place for fuel users now requires that manufacturers use less sulphur. Sulphur is a chemical which makes it more difficult for microbes to grow and flourish.

It is widely believed that without the sulphur present in fuel, it may become contaminated with diesel bug much easier than ever before. This alone is more reason for maintenance of marine vehicles.

However, there is concern that with more restrictions being imposed worldwide thanks to the ongoing pandemic, sailors have become unable to visit their yachts and perform routine maintenance. This factor alone will cause future engine problems for mariners.

For many years, fuel industry specialists have recommended minimising the amount of water within a fuel tank in order to tackle the diesel bug problem effectively. This advice is still totally valid today. However, it’s now much more difficult to effectively remove water from diesel and MGO that contain biofuel.

Biofuels often contain FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters). These materials are extremely hygroscopic—in other words, they absorb and hold on to water more than traditional mineral diesel. In fuel containing FAME, free water can usually be found at the bottom of a tank. But above this free water layer, there is often a hazy layer of suspended water.

According to Conidia Bioscience, the most effective way of controlling the problem is through a combined use of marine fuel testing kits, filtering, filter inspection and finally fuel treatments.

Treatments can involve using biocides, polishing or mechanic cleaning. For more information about marine fuel testing kits or to see other services offered by Conidia see the following link: https://conidia.com/
