The Mental Health Association of Greater Chicago (MHAGC) have launched their new service provider platform to help those in the area that are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing.

The charity aims to use education-based strategies to inform students, parents and administrators of the techniques available to help combat mental illness and launched their new service to allow people to find mental health support providers in their local area.
In the US, almost 50% of adolescents are living with mental illness, and some with serious life-debilitating conditions. The new platform is in place to assist those that need help, especially during these difficult times.
The system allows individuals to search for service providers in their area by filtering for a wide range of factors including age, approach, language, payment, therapist gender, and cultural group, among many others. This allows people to find a provider that will suit their requirements and align with their values.
MHAGC are focused on education and therefore also run several educational programs. They provide teacher-friendly mental-health focused curriculums for educators to use in their lessons, including the ‘Learning2Live’ course that works to educate about mental illness and decrease the stigma surrounding it, and the ‘2Tough2Bully’ course designed to educate, empower, and motivate individuals to speak up and take action against bullying in a positive way. The classes include videos, lesson plans, class activities, and presentations.
They also run a ‘Teaching With a Heart’ course to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to create an optimum learning environment and allow every student to thrive. It uses tested, research-backed strategies and is customizable to meet the unique needs of Chicago schools.
Their ‘Effective Parenting’ program is designed to educate parents of teenage children and help them create a positive approach by developing skills and raising awareness to generate a nurturing home environment. This involves building confidence, developing coping methods, and having access to resources and support needed to effectively deal with any mental health issues.
The non-profit organization was founded in 1957 following the tenants of Clifford Beers, who, after seeking various mental health treatments, dedicated his life to treating mental illness the hygiene of mental health centers. The founders goals were and continue to be finding help through the listing and improving mental health services in the Greater Chicago area.
A spokesperson for the charity said that their vision is: “to significantly reduce the stigma and prejudice associated with mental illness by being the leading national resource provider promoting brain health and developing strategies towards individual mental wellness.”
