Gun Violence – Our Society Continues To Struggle

By: PRLog

Gun violence took the lives of almost 20,000 people in 2020.

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - March 29, 2021 - PRLog -- Our country was once again rocked by mass shootings over the past two weeks. While these type of mass shooting events had been somewhat dormant during the pandemic lockdown, they appear to be making an unfortunate comeback, says Access Patrol Services (APS), a security guard company serving California and Arizona

Even during the lockdown, gun violence was on the rise. The Gun Violence Archive, which tracks gun violence, found that 2020 was a record-breaking year for the number of people who were killed due to gun violence—almost 20,000.

In 2020, 20 private security officers were shot and killed while on duty according to PrivateOfficer.org.

Experts point towards the pandemic and the increase in gun sales as the main reasons for the increase in killings. Support service agencies reduced hours and availability during the past year because of health and distancing precautions. "We train our security guards to defuse volatile situations to reduce violent acts, but criminals who have a disregard for human life don't really care if they shoot someone while carrying out their crime," says Fahim Abid, APS security director.

Abid suggests that there are things we all can do to reduce gun violence. "If you see a family member struggling with mental health issues, seek help on their behalf. If your loved-one who appears struggling with mental illness or could be a danger to others has access to guns, remove the guns from their home," says Abid. "Until our country makes a national commitment to reduce the issues that cause gun violence, it is up to all of us to take action when we see warning signs in the people we love."

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) maintains a 24-hour national helpline that refers callers to local treatment facilities and support groups for help (800-662-4357).
