Riegelwood Federal Credit Union Celebrates International Credit Union Day With Members Appreciation Day

Riegelwood Federal Credit Union is excited to celebrate its valued members with Members Appreciation Day on the 72nd anniversary of International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) on October 15, 2020. With safety a priority concern, Riegelwood will be hosting a convenient drive-thru event where members will receive an appreciation gift and goody bag. Members can choose to pick up these at the drive-up or when they come inside the credit union. Be sure to follow posted signage set out to direct traffic for this event! Additionally all Seniors who request checks on October 15th will be awarded no-cost checks via phone. Members or the joint owner must call and be able to verify qualifying information. This is Riegelwood’s way of reaching out to say: “We thank you for your loyalty.”
International Credit Union Day raises awareness about what it means for members around the world to have a credit union as their financial partner. ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. It is a day of festivities for credit unions and other financial cooperatives globally which includes fundraising, contests, open houses, parades, picnics, and volunteering. “Inspiring hope for a global community” is the theme for 2020 and Riegelwood is proud to participate in the day because it celebrates how credit unions contribute to a brighter future by providing financial empowerment to people all over the world through financial services, education and support. Celebrating the day is a way of not only thinking of customers but reminding members how vital credit unions are not only to the local community but in the larger global community. The day reflects upon the history of the credit union movement, all the while recognizing hard work, promoting achievements, and sharing member experiences.

Members are advised that when they visit Riegelwood on October 15th to please look for the “ENTER HERE” signs and follow the directions to conduct transactions or to simply pass through and say “Hello”. RFCU team will greet members as they enter the building with a special gift for appreciation of loyalty, especially during this trying time. The event will run from 8:00am - 4:30pm.

In 1953 seven employees of Riegel Paper Board Company decided to start a cooperative credit union for themselves in Riegelwood, North Carolina and began encouraging others to begin saving money through a payroll deduction program the credit union provided. The credit union assets started growing when members realized their savings could be loaned to other members as well as themselves as need arose.
One of the first loans made for a member of RFCU was to purchase a new washing machine. Members were thrilled to know they could help others by being a member of the credit union. The credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” was so true for members of Riegelwood Federal Credit Union.
What began with seven members in 1953 has grown to over 12,800 members as of 2020. Riegelwood Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative governed by a member-elected board of directors that are all volunteers. RFCU’s policy is “once a member always a member” and its original purpose and philosophy have remained the same — formed and supported by individuals with a common bond, making financial services available to each other through a cooperative effort.
