Lenovo Announces Three Winners in Global Search for Beijing 2008 Olympic Torchbearers

Lenovo, a worldwide leader in the PC market, announced today the three winners selected to compete for the chance to participate in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay. Lenovo launched the torchbearer search program in early August with the help of Google to find new thinkers from around the world to run the torch in China. This is the longest ever Torch Relay in Olympic history with more cities visited than any past Games.

The three winners who have been submitted to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) as torchbearer nominees are:

  • Diana Mondino, Argentina: A teacher with two sons, Mondino is interested in Literature and Classical music. Her favorite Olympic sports are fencing, rowing and sailing.
  • Mateus Laurito Del Conte, Brazil: As an avid musician, Del Conte says he always watches Olympic events on TV, but especially likes gymnastics, judo and volleyball. He grew up and resides in a small town in Brazil.
  • Erin Roy, Canada: A wife and mother of two, Roy is a passionate Olympic fan and has used the Olympic Games to be an inspiration for achievement throughout her life. She is a financial advisor and is excited about the opportunity to be involved.

Over 6,000 essays from around the world were received during the first phase of the global search. With the help of Lenovo Champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May, the field was narrowed in early October to 18 finalists who were asked to submit a 30-second video clip demonstrating the most imaginative and innovative way they would participate in the Olympic Torch Relay. The winners were determined by the public who were asked to visit http://newthinkers.lenovo.com to vote for their favorite new thinker.

Highlighting the global nature of the contest, the 18 finalists were from eight countries including: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and the United States. The finalist professions range from teachers to filmmakers to a former Olympian.

As a worldwide partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, we are very excited to bring torchbearer opportunities to the general public. This is an innovative approach to torchbearer nomination, said Deepak Advani, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Lenovo. Using Googles search and hosting platforms and with the help of the general public, we were able to identify three passionate new thinkers that have clearly demonstrated their Olympic spirit with unique and smart thinking videos. We are honored to be able make these three individuals part of Olympic history.

The criteria for a new thinker:

  • Motivator One who inspires the community to achieve goals and conquer obstacles
  • Provocative One who disregards traditional boundaries in carrying out a great and difficult endeavor
  • Imaginative One who thinks outside the box outside of national and cultural limitations
  • Individualistic One who demonstrates independence in both their thoughts and their actions
  • Explorer One who seeks new ways of doing and achieving

To show appreciation for New Thinkers registering in the campaign, Lenovo managed weekly promotions to award them Lenovo Olympic pins and Olympic Torch-themed notebook PCs. Lenovo, winner of multiple awards in PC design, is also the designer of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch.

The official torch lighting will take place in Olympia, Greece, in March 2008. The torch is planned to travel to 21 cities in five continents including London, Paris, San Francisco, Canberra, Mumbai, and Nagano, followed by Hong Kong and Macau, before spending 97 days in Mainland China to arrive at its final destination in Beijing on August 8, 2008, marking the start of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
