Frier Levitt Secures $10 Million Personal Injury Settlement for Client as a 'Labor of Love,' According to Judge

PINE BROOK, N.J. - November 19, 2018 - (Newswire.com)

Frier & Levitt, LLC, has announced the settlement of Dertouzos v NJ Transit for $10 million. The Plaintiff, Claire Dertouzos, was represented by Frier Levitt Partner, Michelle L. Greenberg, Esq., and Co-founding Partner, Jonathan E. Levitt, Esq.

Superior Court Judge Bridget Stecher, J.S.C., in deciding the final application in the case commented on the firm’s experience and approach to the case. In describing Jonathan and Michelle’s approach to the client relationship and litigation, “this was a labor of love so to speak for [Claire].”

Ms. Dertouzos was injured on May 28, 2016, while walking in the crosswalk of Mount Prospect Avenue at Heller Parkway in Newark. The NJ Transit bus, driven Erick Estil, was making a left turn where Ms. Dertouzos was walking. The bus struck Ms. Dertouzos causing her to fall to the ground. The rear wheels of the bus ran over Ms. Dertouzos’ legs, causing extensive damage, resulting in a double amputation above both knees. Ms. Dertouzos now is confined to a wheelchair but is in therapy for the use of prosthetics.

The Honorable Judge Stecher outlined Frier Levitt’s extensive work and dedication to Ms. Dertouzos in a written opinion. In describing the efforts and personal dedication of Frier Levitt, Judge Stecher noted, that “counsel employed computer simulations to obtain real-time simulations of the accident itself, which, no doubt, was a costly venture requiring advanced computer technology and expertise. Additionally, counsel has specific health care expertise, allowing for reasonable projections as to future health care expenses. All were done with care and expertise.” The Judge’s sentiment arcuately reflects the firm’s mission statement in the Personal Injury practice group.

Michelle and Jonathan have also been certified as Multi-Million Dollar Advocates by the Million Dollar Advocates Forum for their work on the behalf of Ms. Dertouzos.

NJ Transit was represented by Thomas Hart of Ruprecht, Hart, Weeks & Ricciardulli in Westfield. The case settled after mediation with retired New Jersey Superior Court Judge Eugene Codey of Connell Foley.
