Panel discussion to include Antonio Villaraigosa, Gloria Molina & Richard Polanco

56th Latino Leaders Luncheon Series to honor civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez and Senator Richard Polanco at The California Club on November 15

LOS ANGELES - Nov. 8, 2018 - PRLog -- The Latino Leaders Network (LLN), a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing leaders together, will host a leadership panel and reception with Mickey Ibarra, editor of Latino Leaders Speak: Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph and David Ayón, author of Power Shift: How Latinos in California Transformed Politics in America.  The event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes (501 N. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012).

Antonio Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, Gloria Molina, former member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and Richard Polanco, former California State Senate Majority Leader, will participate in a leadership panel to explore the connection between their personal stories and personal impact on public policy. Norma Vega, Chief Strategy and External Relations Officer at the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region, will moderate the discussion.

"Our stories are powerful and need to be told," said Mickey Ibarra, Chairman of the Latino Leaders Network. "We have role models, inspiring heroes and outstanding leaders that give us hope."

In addition, on Thursday, Nov. 15, LLN will convene the 56th Latino Leaders Luncheon Series event to honor civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez with the Eagle Leadership Award from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The California Club (538 S. Flower St., Los Angeles). LLN will also present the Chairman's Award to Senator Richard Polanco for his outstanding contributions to the Latino community and California. Guest speakers at this "by invitation-only" event also include civil rights activist Dolores Huerta and Mayor Eric Garcetti.

At the age of nine, Sylvia Mendez and her two brothers were denied enrollment at the 17th Street School in Westminster and told to enroll at the "Mexican school" ten blocks away. Appalled by the discrimination, their parents led the landmark Mendez v. Westminster civil rights case of 1946 that helped outlaw almost 100 years of segregation in California and served as a precedent seven years later for Brown v. Board of Education. Mendez, a civil rights icon, went on to become a nurse and retired after working for thirty years in her field. She now gives lectures to educate others about the historic contributions made by her parents and the co-plaintiffs in the case.

"We are immensely grateful for the lifelong impact of Sylvia Mendez and her courageous family," said Ibarra. "They fought for what is right and their legacy will continue to touch the lives of students and families forever."

LLN's community partner is the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Event sponsors include Anheuser-Busch, The Coca-Cola Company, GEICO, Southwest Airlines, and Edison International.

Guests will receive a copy of Latino Leaders Speak: Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph, compliments of Edison International. The book features 33 keynote addresses delivered at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series by leaders from a wide variety of occupations, including government, sports, entertainment, education, journalism and more.
