Disadvantaged Students in Poverty-Stricken East Palo Alto Outperform their California peers

By: PRLog
10 Books A Home's annual report card results show that its program is helping high-risk youth beat all odds.
EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. & SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jan. 23, 2018 - PRLog -- 10 Books A Home serves communities with the highest concentration of poverty rates and academic struggle nationally: 81% of students in East Palo Alto are performing below grade level and 60% will eventually drop out of high school. At the end of last year the organization published the results of 2016-17 school report cards, showing incredibly encouraging progress of those primary school students that have completed its unique home tutoring program. 10BH graduates are not only performing at or above grade level in nine subjects, but out performing their California peers in both Math and English. Read the full report here.

10BH's mission is to prevent the achievement gap by ensuring high poverty preschoolers enter kindergarten above grade level and with families who are permanently invested in their learning. "ILMers" - the children who participate in 10BH's home tutoring program for two years from age three until they enter kindergarten - discover their Intrinsic Learning Motivation (ILM) and through this develop the skills and knowledge needed for kindergarten and beyond.

This small nonprofit with an annual operating budget of under a million dollars is quickly building evidence for its unique brain-based methodology. Every year 10BH collects the report cards of its graduates on a voluntary basis. This most recent report analyzes the results of 72 students, accounting for 81% of total 10BH graduates and included kids from kindergarten up to third grade. The following areas of impact are highlighted:
  • 10BH graduates are performing better in both Math and English than everyone else in the state
  • 10BH English-language learner (ELL) students are succeeding at over 4x the rate of their counterparts in California
  • Scores are holding over time. Students from the first cohort (now in third grade) are still performing remarkably well
  • In the Ravenswood City School District 10BH grads are performing nearly 6x better in Math and over 4x better in English.
  • Compared to students who are economically disadvantaged overall, there is a nearly 2x increase in English and Math for 10BH grads

The organization is supported by some prominent foundations, including the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and David & Lucile Packard Foundation, for its unique approach and ability to address some of the most elusive challenges of poverty. One of its long-time supporters, Peery Foundation recently said, "Peery Foundation is excited to partner with 10 Books A Home. The organization is addressing a really critical need and doing what no one else is doing in the community. The program offers access to quality early education and engagement for the whole family. It is making a profound impact on 3- to 5-year-olds, their siblings, and parents. It could be surprising to some that an organization can deliver its program through volunteers just as effectively as it would through paid professional tutors." One of the secrets of the organization's success is its innovative personalized education philosophy, which is bringing the future of education to now.

With the conclusion of this report, 10BH's Intrinsic Learning Motivation (ILM) Program now has four years of data proving its efficacy. For a program that is only six years old and a nonprofit of this size, it is exemplary that it has data quickly stacking up as evidence of its impact.
