Anjulie Ponce of Powers Taylor LLP, a Dallas law firm specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice cases, obtained a jury verdict of $111,000 in a case involving a pedestrian who was struck by a car while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. The Collin County jury took two hours of deliberation before finding that Ponce’s client was entitled to the award for past and future medical expenses, physical pain and mental anguish, and physical impairment. The client’s injuries were originally diagnosed as only soft-tissue injuries, but it was later discovered that she had torn ligaments in her wrists which eventually required surgery.

The defense had argued that the client initially entered the crosswalk while the “do not walk” sign was illuminated, and that the mechanics of the impact could not have caused the client to injure her wrists. In her first jury trial since joining Powers Taylor in 2014, Ponce relied on the client’s own testimony and the testimony of the surgeon who performed the surgery to defeat the defendant’s theory. After the verdict was rendered on January 25, 2017, Ponce said, “We are pleased with the outcome, which was more than 3 times what the defendant had offered in settlement. Collin County has a reputation for having extremely conservative jurors, but we knew that even conservative communities want to ensure that careless drivers are held accountable for the consequences of their actions.” Judge Cynthia Wheless presided over the two-day trial.
