Corrosion Prevention (R)Evolution in Defense and Industry Applications

By: PRLog
The key to corrosion prevention: stop the cause, don't just mask the symptoms
CAMAS, Wash. - Sept. 28, 2016 - PRLog -- Non-toxic, biodegradable CleanWirx offers a revolutionary and effective approach to corrosion prevention. This unique product decontaminates surfaces, eliminating a wide spectrum of micro-contamination (i.e., sulfur, chlorine, microbials) proven to remain in surface reactive sites after conventional cleaning. CleanWirx removes mill scale, flash rust and other interference materials simply and effectively, setting the stage for true corrosion prevention.

Real-World Success:

On site applications in harsh real world situations confirm what Scanning Electron Microscopy and analysis verified in 2012: CleanWirx is the only surface preparation system that successfully removes the causes of corrosion-related coating failure. Two of several examples:

· Petroleum Storage Tank: failed to pass pre-coating inspection due to extraordinarily high contaminant levels stemming from a polluted water-cut zone and remained out of service across several months of exhaustive re-blasting to try to remedy the problem. At the suggestion of Sherwin Williams, CleanWirx was implemented. Within four days, the tank was decontaminated, passed the inspection, coated and returned to service.

· Brine Pit Pipes: After more than a decade, inspection revealed no corrosion (even on bolt threads) on pipes treated with CleanWirx. In contrast, two similar sites treated using traditional surface preparation methods required re-treatment due to corrosion infiltration FOUR TIMES within the same time span.

Prevention is the Ultimate Control:

"Corrosion control" in the mining industry and other highly aggressive environments is driven by operations budgets that can no longer support high replacement costs, the need to comply with increasingly strict environmental standards, and pressure from public opinion for "greener" industrial operations. What the industry fails to recognize is that "Control" is not "Prevention".

The mining industry currently relies on costly, ineffective "stop-gap" painting and coating that only serves to temporarily alleviate the symptoms of corrosion. Rather like putting a bandage on a festering wound, putting a protective coating over the problem simply hides the malignancy beneath. Without proper attention, decay will worsen. Putting on a bigger bandage won't help. Decontamination, on and within the surface, is the key.

Removing the causes of corrosion prevents flash rust from forming, so protective coatings can be applied in a continuous process, without acid washing, dehumidification or re-blasting. Forget stress corrosion cracking. CleanWirx decontamination allows coatings to adhere (and perform) significantly better. Because it eliminates contaminants that negatively affect puddling and weld porosity, CleanWirx facilitates better welds, better coating over welds, and more effective overall corrosion prevention.

Prevention is the most effective, economical, and ecological method of combatting corrosion. Eliminating underlying causes prevents corrosion formation or proliferation, leaving little need for extended measures beyond regular scheduled monitoring and inspections to verify continued performance and record ongoing compliance.
