Echelon Corp. Joins Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an Industrial Member

Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), a leading independent control networking company for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), today announced it has joined the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in membership to support and participate in the institute’s pursuit of the study and commercialization of transformational smart lighting systems. Echelon and ERC will explore innovative motion sensing and color tuning technology. The ERC brings together industry, academia and industry to build an ecosystem that will speed the commercialization of discoveries made by the ERC.

“We are pleased that a company such as Echelon Corp., who share our strong desire to innovate in lighting, has joined the ERC,” said Robert F. Karlicek, Jr., Ph.D., Director, Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center. “Our goal is to create the opportunities to study, create and bring solutions to market that improve the health, productivity and well-being for people while delivering greater energy savings.”

“The Smart Lighting ERC is one of the leading research centers solely focused on exploring the possibilities that lighting can bring to society,” said Sohrab Modi, Chief Technology Officer, Echelon. “As an industry, we have only cracked the surface of how lighting can be manipulated to improve our surrounding and our inner being. We look forward to work with the ERC over the next years.”

About the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC)

Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the ERC is an interdisciplinary, multi-university center developing “Smart Lighting Systems that See and ThinkTM”. The Center engages faculty members, graduate students, research staff, and undergraduates to work on research leading to smart lighting systems with adaptive and controllable properties that will change the way society uses lighting. The Center joins academia, industry, and government in partnership to produce transformational-engineered systems, along with engineering graduates who are adept at innovation and primed for leadership in the global economy. The Smart Lighting ERC is headquartered at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and partners with Boston University and The University of New Mexico to achieve its objectives.
