New California Law Puts Science Over Politics, According to Authors of New Book

By: PRLog
“It’s a common sense law,” say authors of The Vaccination Debate
ESTES PARK, Colo. - Dec. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- On January 1, when SB-277 becomes law in California, childhood immunizations become mandatory and “Science trumps politics,” according to Dr. Chris Spinelli, co-author with Maryann Karinch of The Vaccination Debate: Making the Right Choice for Your Children (New Horizon Press, December 2015). The law eliminates the “personal belief” exemption.

“The law does not reflect a victory of Big Pharma as some opponents allege,” states Spinelli. “It is a victory of science and common sense in the interest of public health.”

When the outbreak of measles emerged from Disneyland in December 2014, the heated debate on vaccination resurged on the world stage once again and the new California law adds fuel. Even though immunization is regarded as one of the greatest achievements in our public health system today, a growing number of people fear vaccines more than the actual diseases they are designed to protect people from. The internet is filled with horror stories of damaging or even deadly side effects from using vaccines.

The authors concur that some of these “horror stories” capture outcomes that have some basis in the facts. But as Spinelli notes, “The ill effects of vaccines are rare and public health benefits are abundantly clear. That said, we must continue research to ensure the highest safety standards for vaccines.”

In The Vaccination Debate, Spinelli and Karinch shed much needed light on the controversial issue of vaccine safety. By examining the schedule of vaccines from birth through adolescence, Spinelli and Karinch dispel the common myths surrounding immunization and draw factually-based conclusions with a tone that a caring pediatrician would use when speaking to concerned parents. Important scientific topics are explored in the context of our everyday lives, such as vaccine preservatives, natural immunity and herbal remedies; and all without the need for the embellished kind of rhetoric that confuses so much of the issue. This is a book that features evidence.
