Markets Advance On Election Day

The markets advanced during the midday with the Dow leaping 167 points to 13,279 as citizens cast their votes for the next president of the United States. Nasdaq gained 17 points to 3017.On the upsideAOL (NYSE: AOL) swung to a better than expected profit for the third quarter.Computer Sciences (NYSE: CSC) reversed year ago losses to post profit for the second quarter that surpassed analyst expectations by a wide margin.Acadia Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ACAD) narrowed third quarter losses as revenue surged. On the downsideVivus (Nasdaq: VVUS) widened third quarter losses more than expected as expenses climbed.Coeur d’Alene Mines (NYSE: CDE) blamed lower silver prices for falling to a greater than expected loss for the third quarter.Quicksilver Resources (NYSE: KWK) fell to a larger than expected loss for the third quarter.In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 5 to 2 on the NYSE and by more than 2 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 6 points to 825.
