Dr. Blachly’s experience in arts management includes leadership positions at the University of Florida, UCLA Performing Arts, Colorado State University, Columbia Artists Management, and the 1982 World’s Fair
PRLog - June 3, 2015 - LOS ANGELES -- Arts Consulting Group, Inc. (ACG), the leading provider of hands-on management consulting services to the arts and culture industry, today announced that industry veteran Dr. Michael Blachly will join the firm effective September 1, 2015 as vice president. Currently, Dr. Blachly serves as director of University of Florida Performing Arts, a position he has held since 2000.

Based in ACG’s Tampa office, Dr. Blachly will lead the firm’s Facilities & Program Planning practice, which provides concept and financial planning, program assessment and development, market analysis, and fundraising for cultural facilities such as performing arts centers, theaters, and museums, among others. ACG provides integrated consulting services to nonprofit cultural organizations, cities, universities and others that bring new, renovated, and restored facilities projects from the earliest concept stages to grand opening. Recent ACG projects include the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana; Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas; American Shakespeare Festival Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut; and the Freeman Stage, a project of the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, in Olney, Maryland.

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Blachly’s wide-ranging experience in presenting, producing, and managing arts organizations prior to the University of Florida includes director positions at UCLA Performing Arts, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Colorado State University, and University of Tennessee. In the private sector, his leadership experience includes serving as vice president and West Coast director of sales for Columbia Artists Management; vice president of Bill Fegan Attractions; and assistant vice president and director of performing arts for the 1982 World’s Fair.

In making the announcement, ACG President Bruce D. Thibodeau said, “It is an honor to welcome Michael Blachly to ACG. As he joins the ACG team in September, we are positioning the firm’s Facilities & Program Planning practice to bring high-value solutions to a growing number of organizations throughout North America. Dr. Blachly is an industry veteran who will offer arts and culture organizations a wealth of knowledge and insight to successfully navigate the process of embracing mission-based program and facilities projects that will enrich communities for many years to come.”

“After working in the performing arts field as a presenter, agent, manager, producer, and performing arts center director, I look forward to the opportunity to give back to a profession that has meant so much to me for my entire career,” said Dr. Blachly. “It is my hope to share the knowledge that I have gained through my professional experience and under the tutelage of all of my mentors. I look forward to joining the professional team that exists at ACG to support arts and culture organizations to program, build, renovate and enhance cultural facilities.”

“Cultural facilities and performing arts venues are among the most accessible platforms provided in today’s society for learning about the diverse peoples and cultures of the world,” continued Dr. Blachly. “That is to say, not only the differences but the similarities shared by individuals globally. The connection between artist and audience member can transcend age, gender, geographic distance, language barriers and cultural nuances to create a bond of understanding and mutual appreciation. Through this exchange there is the chance of a broader understanding of how our world works and, by extension, how we can each be better citizens striving for harmony for future generations.”

In his current role, Dr. Blachly oversees operations of the University of Florida’s comprehensive presenting organization, University of Florida Performing Arts, including four facilities ranging in capacity from 100 to 1,800 seats. Previously, Dr. Blachly served as director of UCLA Performing Arts. In this role, he led operations of the arts organization, which during his tenure had an annual operating budget in excess of $8 million, and managed production of more than 250 concerts and events produced in multiple venues ranging in capacities from 528 to 12,000 seats. In addition, he oversaw the renovation and reopening of UCLA’s Royce Hall following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

Dr. Blachly has a long history of volunteerism and community service, including serving as chair of the Board of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters; Board of Directors member of Chamber Music America; Board of Directors member of North American Performing Arts Managers and Agents; Board of Directors vice president of California Presenters; and 2000 Congress Chairman of the National Conference of the International Society of Performing Arts.

Dr. Blachly holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Theatre/Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado, a Master of Arts in Communication Theory/Sociology from Washington State University, and a PhD in Educational Psychology/Higher Education Administration from the University of Tennessee.
