Subaru’s Newest Pet Project is Making Car Rides Safer for Dogs

By: PRLog
The pet-friendly automaker is helping fund the first research study of its kind on the dangers of driving with a dog in the car.
PRLog - Aug 15, 2013 - HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- For anyone who has seen the Subaru ads that read “Dog Tested. Dog Approved,” the news that the automaker is throwing its support behind a research project that aims to make vehicles safer for passengers named Fido or Rover should come as no surprise. The team at Subaru of Hilton Head, a premier dog-friendly dealership for drivers in coastal Georgia and the Lowcountry, whole-heartedly supports this project.

Located in the pet-friendly New River Auto Mall, which just last June held a “Bring Your Dog to Work” celebration and fundraiser for a local animal rescue shelter, the staff of Subaru of Hilton Head is keenly aware that very little has been done to provide adequate protection for pets in vehicles.

The research is being conducted by the nonprofit Center for Pet Safety at a laboratory in Virginia where government tests on child seats are performed. The crash simulations use life-like dog-shaped crash dummies in a series of tests. The tests are designed to collect and analyze data on the results of vehicle collisions involving four-legged passengers.

By supporting this research, Subaru is hoping that standards can be set for the various in-vehicle tethers, crates, harnesses, gates, and cages currently marketed without any regulation of requirements or specifications.

According to a survey conducted by AAA in 2011, only 16% of dog owners use any kind of restraint to secure and protect their dog while riding in a car. The team at Subaru of Hilton Head believes that, if this study can provide the data necessary for the development of products that make riding in a car safer for dogs while raising awareness among dog owners of in-vehicle pet safety, then it will have succeeded.

Subaru of Hilton Head is part of the New River Auto Mall. The New River Auto Mall is a group of 12 dealerships featuring 16 franchises, including Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Ram, Subaru, and Volkswagen. The New River Auto Mall is located on Highway 278, 5 miles east of I-95 at exit 8. You can find the mall online at www.newriverautomall.com
