Mover, an Edmonton, Canada-based startup that makes it easier for businesses and individuals to migrate their data between cloud storage providers, today announced that it has raised a $1 million seed round. The round includes a number of well-known U.S. and Canadian investors, including Double M Partners, Yaletown Venture Partners, Amplify, Medra Capital, and angel investors Jarl Mohn, Rick Barry of Quant Ventures, and Dennis Phelps.

As Eric Wanke, Mover’s CEO and co-founder, told me today, the new funding “will be used to immediately bring on sales and marketing staff. We’re finding our niche and now we need to blast it out of the water by scaling up all operations. This funding will also allow us to expand our partnerships and cover a broader base of services.”

Mover, which was previously known as Backup Box, supports all of the major cloud storage services, including Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, SugarSync, Box and Amazon’s S3. It even lets you transfer MySQL databases or your website (over FTP) in order to back them up to your favorite cloud storage service. While the obvious use case here is migrating data between services, Mover can also be used as a backup solution that replicates your data on multiple cloud storage services.

Mover launched out of Vancouver’s Growlab accelerator just under a year ago and is currently participating in Amplify’s accelerator program in Los Angeles. Since its launch, Mover has moved over 300 million files and currently performs about 5,000 transfers each day.
