New York breast augmentation pro Dr. Elliot Heller discusses the harms of seeking bargain plastic surgery in Mexico in light of two Texas women's surgical disasters in Tijuana, Mexico.


Everyone knows that when in Mexico, they shouldn't drink the water but, what they seem to forget - time and time again - is that they shouldn't have plastic surgery either - at least when it seems too good to be true.

The most recent victims were Texans Mimi Valdez and her niece Chrissy, whose stories were shared in an interview with KENS 5. Both had recently lost nearly 150 lbs. and were looking to improve their figures with body contouring procedures.

They found a bargain at a Tijuana facility called Jerusalem Hospital, which they were shocked to find located in a strip plaza. What was also not appealing was their results.

Chrissy claimed skin was protruding from her breast enhancement incisions and Mimi said she is now permanently disfigured and was extremely ill when she returned to the states.

"I know I made a bad decision in going through with my surgery," says Chrissy. "I shouldn't have ignored my intuition."

Unfortunately they were ill-informed and missed other red flags that should have been spotted before committing to surgery.

These "over the border" facilities are campaigning hard to draw more patients in - especially Jerusalem Hospital.

Their home page is armed with the statement "Your patient liaison will schedule your procedures and assist in booking flight and hotel reservations." Now if that doesn't scream, "We want to lure U.S. citizens to our facility," what does?

And patient liaisons and surgeries are available 24 hours per day - in case a patient wants to have plastic surgery on a whim - because that is always a grand idea - unless you're looking for a qualified and experienced surgeon.

"There are absolutely some quality surgeons in Mexico however, it's extremely important to not get lured in by 'bargains' that are obviously too good to be true," says Dr. Elliot Heller, a plastic surgeon in New York.
