Tech Council of Maryland Names GlycoMimetics CEO Rachel King as 2013 Executive of the Year

GlycoMimetics, Inc. announced today that the Tech Council of Maryland (TCM) named Rachel K. King, GlycoMimetics Chief Executive Officer, as the winner of its 2013 Executive of the Year award. Ms. King was honored last night at the TCM's 25th Annual Tech Awards Celebration at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Rockville, Maryland.

“The TCM Tech Awards is a prestigious recognition program for technology and life science organizations in Maryland. It is a tremendous honor to be named Executive of the Year,” said Ms. King. “In the ten years since I co-founded GlycoMimetics, I have been extremely grateful to work in an industry that is meaningful to me, with my colleagues at GlycoMimetics, and with the many other industry representatives in the local business community who believe in making a difference for people living with diseases.”

Under Ms. King’s leadership, GlycoMimetics entered into an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Pfizer Inc. in late 2011 for the GlycoMimetics investigational compound GMI-1070, which recently completed Phase 2 development for the treatment of vaso-occlusive crisis associated with sickle cell disease. GMI-1070 has received Orphan Drug and Fast Track status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and GlycoMimetics recently announced positive top line data from its Phase 2 study. To date, the company has raised over $60 million in funding from venture firms including Genzyme Ventures and New Enterprise Associates, where Ms. King was an Executive in Residence. Previously, she was a Senior Vice President at Novartis. In addition, she serves on the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board and is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School. Last month, she was named Chairwoman of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

The Tech Council of Maryland’s Tech Awards Celebration is the Mid-Atlantic region’s largest and most prestigious awards ceremony, recognizing the leaders and innovators in the technology and life science communities from Maryland and the surrounding regions. TCM recognizes Mid-Atlantic companies in six categories: Executive of the Year, CFO of the Year, CIO/CTO of the Year, High Technology Firm of the Year, Government Contracting Firm of the Year, Emerging Firm of the Year, and Life Sciences Firm of the Year, the category in which GlycoMimetics was honored as the winner in 2012. Each of this year’s winners has demonstrated a proven ability to grow, adapt and thrive in today’s business climate.
