We wrote about small business mobile payments startup Emu launching its flat-fee dongle-less mobile payments service in the U.K. last month. Today the company has announced its opening up to accept card payments in 16 more countries in Europe. Emu had previously offered registrations to European merchants outside the U.K. but with international registrations growing by more than 65 percent per day it’s going live across Europe.

In the U.K., Emu says use of its payment platform is growing by more than 100 percent per day — since the September 28 launch.

The full list of countries in which Emu is now open for business is: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain and the U.K.

Emu’s cloud-based system works across mobile gadgets such as smartphones and tablets or on desktop PCs. Sellers register online and can then start accepting card payments on the device of their choice — either by keying in card details (for new customers) or sending the customer a link to make a payment. Once customers are registered with Emu, the payment proceeds speeds up, even if they haven’t shopped with that particular merchant before. There is no charge for merchants to use the service for the first €1,250 of sales. After this, sellers pay a flat fee of €6.50 per month, regardless of how many transactions they make.
