VitaPortal, a Russian provider of online and mobile health tools and content aimed at helping people live healthier lifestyles, has closed $2 million in Series A funding, led by Russian investment firm Prostor Capital, and also backed by angel investor Esther Dyson.

This follows a separate $4 million investment in Russian online labour-booking company Eruditor, earlier this month — led by Intel Capital — which operates another Russian health services website, called InfoDoctor.

VitaPortal said the $2 million investment will be used for continued development of user-profile-based personsonalization technology, including online health management tools and a physician and hospital ranking system, to help people make informed choices about their healthcare. It provides online and mobile tools to help its users make healthier choices — and says it now offers more than 30 health measurement and personalization tools. It also provides content for Russian-speaking physicians, and notes that all published materials and tools on its website undergo a “rigorous medical review process” by certified physicians.

The company asserts there is high demand for online health services in Russia, noting that more than one million people used its services in the past six months alone. “Demand for quality online healthcare services in the Russian Internet is incredible, and we are working hard to provide people with health management tools, based on user-generated data. We believe that personalization gives people a much better opportunity to take care of their health,” said Azamat Ulbashev, CEO and co-founder of VitaPortal, in a statement.

Alexey Solovyov, Managing Director, Prostor Capital, added in a statement: “We have been following the development of VitaPortal since the start of operations a year ago and think that they have a great healthcare online service offering and technologies, appealing to both customers and physicians. We see a huge potential in Russia’s online medical segment and believe that VitaPortal platform is specifically suited to meet the increasing needs and expectations of people looking for qualified information in the medical field. After extensive analysis of the range of Internet services in this area, we believe that VitaPortal is the clear market leader in this fast growing industry.”

VitaPortal’s operational partner and founder investor is Fastlane Ventures.
