Salmonella Vaccines Recommended for Holidaymakers visiting Egypt

By: PRLog
PR Log - May 16, 2012 - NaTHNaC (the National Travel Health Network and Centre), supported by the Health Protection Agency is recommending that long term travellers and children should be vaccinated to reduce the risks of contracting Salmonella Typhi when visiting Egypt.

Salmonella is transmitted through contaminated food and water and it is hoped that these vaccinations for Salmonella Typhi will reduce the potential for contracting salmonella by 50-80%. The vaccination does not mean that you are completely risk free of catching a travel bug like salmonella so we advise all holidaymakers to adopt sensible hygiene including regular hand washing in hot soapy water to help reduce the risk.

Paul Stevens, Group Travel Litigation Manager at Simpson Millar advises:
"When considering a visit to Egypt, it is essential that you seek advice from your GP in advance of travelling to reduce the risks of infection from travel related sickness bugs and other more serious illnesses that you could be susceptible to at your holiday destination."

"We are regularly contacted by people wanting assistance having returned from a holiday with a food poisoning bug such as salmonella. We can usually help UK holidaymakers who have booked package holidays and have had their holidays in Egypt ruined by a travel illness bug, but if you opted for a dynamic holiday you could find yourself out of pocket."

"While vaccinations may help to prevent Salmonella Typhi, there are various strands of salmonella that will not prevent the spread of infection. As a result, holidaymakers and tour operators alike must be vigilant to avoid contracting food poisoning in Egypt. Salmonella can be very harmful especially for children and the elderly and in some instances require hospitalisation."

"Tour operators have duties under the Package Travel Regulations 1992 to ensure their hotels do their utmost to prevent hotel guests from becoming ill with Salmonella on holiday. If you have not booked with a tour operator, there is a need to be extra cautious because taking legal action in Egypt is a lot more difficult than in the UK if you contract Salmonella and someone else is at fault."

Simpson Millar LLP are leading Holiday Travel Claims Specialists and have helped many people claim compensation following an illness outbreak at a hotel or resort in Egypt.  To find out if you could claim why not call us on 0808 145 1353 today.
