Atlanta Technical College’s LaNette Holloman is TCSG Student of the Year

By: PRLog
PR Log - Apr 30, 2012 - LaNette Holloman, a business management student at Atlanta Technical College, has been named as the Technical College System of Georgia’s 2012 Student of the Year.

The award was announced during a banquet honoring the system’s top students and instructors at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta on April 26.

LaNette competed for the top student honor as part of the system’s annual Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) program, which recognizes the best students at each of the state’s 25 technical colleges and one Board of Regents college with a technical division.

“The Technical College System of Georgia enrolled 190,000 students last year, so being chosen as our student of the year is quite a remarkable accomplishment,” said TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson. “LaNette has an amazing story to tell of overcoming some of life’s adversities and improving her life and that of her family through technical education. Our judges were equally as impressed with her outstanding achievement in her college classes and her strong leadership and communication skills. The entire Technical College System of Georgia congratulates LaNette for her selection as the very best among the top college students in the state.”

The distinction as Georgia’s top technical college student also means that LaNette is a winner of the GOAL program’s grand prize, the keys to a brand-new 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet and the local Chevrolet dealers are the statewide sponsors of the GOAL program.

LaNette was nominated for the award by her instructor, Ms. Michelle Roach.  Both were introduced to the banquet audience that included the TCSG leadership, college presidents and their staff, and other dignitaries.

“LaNette will be an outstanding spokesperson for the Technical College System of Georgia,” said Alvetta Peterman Thomas, president of Atlanta Technical College.  “She embodies all of the positive attributes of our students and her story is a testament to how technical education can reshape lives. “
LaNette worked in corporate America for many years, holding positions with reputable companies such as Morgan Stanley and American Express.  Unfortunately, she like thousands of Americans was badly affected by the economy’s downturn.  She found herself unemployed and overwhelmed by mounting challenges.

Reflecting on her experience, she says, “First we lost our home, then we lost our vehicle. Eventually, my husband, our seven youngest children and I found ourselves living in a one-room motel with two beds and a small kitchenette. At that moment, I realized that all of my wits and experience were not enough to make up for what I lacked in education. I decided to return to college.”

Remembering a friend who had enrolled at Atlanta Technical College to study accounting, she decided to make the college her educational institution of choice. Majoring in Business Management, LaNette has made the most of her technical college experience. She has established herself as a leader by being voted student government treasurer, and is a collegiate historian with the DECA marketing society. LaNette is a member of Phi Beta Lamda, SkillsUSA, and the National Technical Honor Society. Furthermore, she holds a 3.9 grade point average.

Technical education is now a staple in lives of the Holloman family.  LaNette is a star student at Atlanta Technical College.  She is joined on campus by her eldest son and his wife, who are both enrolled in public service technology programs, and by her youngest daughter who attends the Atlanta Technical College Pre-K program.

As the 2012 Student of the Year and state GOAL winner, LaNette will serve as the TCSG’s student ambassador during a number of system and college functions throughout the year.  She will also have a chance to speak before the Georgia General Assembly and receive a personal commendation from the Governor.
