Humanity has long been afraid of the dark. It is where the most dangerous predators lurk and where our imagination goes wild while our ability to see is essentially impaired. As it envelops our once-bright and lively surroundings, the night is incredibly unsure; uncertainty has taken on life. The darkness belongs in the pantheon of terrifying things.
And for the longest time, we humans have been trying to combat the night. We've utilized fire, electricity, and now night vision. It is the soldiers who benefit the most from mastering the night. Not so different from Michael Barone of “Michael's Eyes.”
Charlie Boring brings us a story that talks about the dominance of the night and the power it has over us. But at the same time, he introduces a character who wields the uncanny ability to see in the dark. The thriller follows the titular Michael Barone. As a young Texan, Michael Barone grows up in a small Texas town and experiences adventures that are influenced by his unique ability. He joins the Green Berets and serves in one of history's most brutal conflicts, the Vietnam War. He uses his strange ability to great effect, as part of the special forces of the Green Berets. He participates in clandestine operations, even in Cambodia.
But Michael Barone's life does not end in the war, as his adventures still follow him soon after. “Michael's Eyes” is undoubtedly a captivating page-turner. An intriguing perspective on the idea of superpowers and how they might have been used in practice. There is a concept at play here that revolves around Low Science Fiction, where we are shown how a character with certain potent, but undiscovered, abilities might adapt to his environment. Charlie Boring, the author, is forthright. Giving us a page-turning thriller told entirely through Michael's eyes.
