Nonprofit Launches "Jails Last" Program With 65-Bed Site In Long Beach, CA

Partnering with LA County on incarceration alternatives, Holliday’s Helping Hands (HHH) is opening its first residential facility in Long Beach that offers its residents the services they need to reintegrate back into society as productive citizens. Grand opening is Wednesday, July 31 from 11am-12:30 pm

In an effort to transform the justice landscape in Los Angeles County by breaking the reliance on incarceration, Holliday’s Helping Hands (HHH) is opening its first residential facility in Long Beach (834 Pacific Avenue) to accommodate up to 55 individuals at a time with the services they need to reintegrate back into society as productive citizens. A grand opening will be held on Wednesday, July 31 from 11am-12:30 pm

HHH is working with LA County’s Justice, Care and Opportunities Department (JCOD) on the project whose stated mission is to “safely depopulate and eventually close LA’s Men’s Central Jail by expanding the continuum of care for individuals being diverted or released from jail, while ensuring public health and safety.”

The program also aims to improve health outcomes, increase self-sufficiency and reduce recidivism. To ensure its success, an oversight committee focusing on policy development and data gathering/analysis and an external affairs unit tasked with strengthening relations with the surrounding communities have been set up.

“We are delighted to partner with LA County on making the Justice, Care, Opportunity program a success,” says Miss Katina Holliday, founder and executive director of her eponymous nonprofit. “Holliday’s Helping Hands has a long history of serving marginalized communities throughout the region including those facing homelessness and women who were formerly incarcerated. Our mission is transforming their lives through various programs and I’m proud to say that we have witnessed many of our clients become happy, productive members of society.”

Miss Holliday established Holliday’s Helping Hands in 2018. In addition to finding housing for those in need, HHH helps clients develop “roadmaps” for their futures -- detailed, comprehensive plans that help them hone their lifestyle skills, plan home budgets, prepare for job interviews and become good neighbors and citizens. The nonprofit also offers its Shine Ambassador Work Source Program (SAWS), which trains and prepares them for jobs in various fields including food service, landscape/ maintenance, screen printing and customer service. HHH currently boasts a workforce of 200 ranging from social workers to maintenance staff.
