Churches of Scientology Disaster Response coordinates with other religions, national disaster response groups to address long term recovery from devastating natural and man-made disasters

Phoenix hosted the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster annual conference bringing together over 900 disaster response and relief experts

Over 900 disaster response and relief volunteers gathered in Phoenix, AZ, at the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster annual conference. The conference brought together those with expertise on helping survivors of both natural and man-made disasters.

For decades, the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) (www.nvoad.org) has been the only civil society national organization bringing together over 75 member disaster organizations and government partners. The more than 900 participants attending this year took advantage of the networking opportunities, workshops and exhibit booths to further their knowledge of the disaster response and relief field.

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster works with local, state, and federal officials to help coordinate volunteer disaster response organizations and to share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle – preparation, response and recovery – to help disaster survivors and their communities. NVOAD consists of 55 state and territory organizations with over a hundred national members and partners. They help organize disaster response and long term recovery to maximize the effectiveness of voluntary organizations by coordinating where help is needed and what type of help each area might need (housing, food, emotional support, insurance assistance).

For the last 22 years Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) (https://csdr-us.org/) has participated at the national conference with their distinctive yellow exhibit hall booth and taken part in national committees including the communications, international, and emotional and spiritual care committees.

The National VOAD is the only organization in the United States which brings together disaster relief groups from many faiths including Scientologists, Methodists, Baptists, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and others including the American Red Cross and other non-profits to focus on disaster response issues with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state and county emergency management agencies. With large and small disaster incidents on the rise, the disaster community focuses on the VOAD four C's: cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration.

“It is an honor to have been a member of the National VOAD for so many years,” said Rev. Sue Taylor, National Director of CSDR. “The VOAD community is a special one focusing solely on helping to bring hope, help and resilience to those who have survived disasters. We have responded over the years to well over a hundred incidents such as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, the Haiti earthquake, Alabama tornadoes, and smaller county and state responses in Utah, California, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida amongst other areas. The National VOAD has brought us all together, given us policy and tools to better our abilities and created a powerful network with government agencies unlike any other.”

This year CSDR had a large booth in the exhibit hall displaying photos of their many disaster responses and how CSDR’s trained volunteers, who are called Volunteer Ministers, help handle trauma, loss, upset, stress and confusion with those affected by disasters.

Prior to the official conference days, CSDR staff held an introductory training seminar at the Church of Scientology of Arizona in Phoenix to help expand their volunteer network in the Southwest. The church serves not only its church members but the entire community and is a meeting ground of cooperative effort to uplift people of all denominations by sharing its many social betterment and community outreach programs.

Churches of Scientology Disaster Response is a US based disaster response organization incorporated in Washington, DC, with over 25 branches around the country helping to coordinate local and regional responses with government agencies and other NVOAD organizations.
