Breaking Window News: UK-made sash windows withstand 120 mph winds in tests

Colin’s Sash Windows products passed third-party tests with flying colours, proving they can cope with the worst of the British weather.

Homeowners worried about wintry weather, climate change, and energy bills are in luck. Luton-based Colin’s Sash Windows recently had their uPVC sash window tested which proved it can cope with the worst of British weather with flying colours. Tests demonstrated the UK-made sash windows could withstand wind speeds of 120 mph and remain watertight after being sprayed with eight litres of water per minute for 40 minutes, achieving one of the highest ratings possible.

Company founder and owner Colin Greenslade was pleased with the results.

“Many people come to me, worried about the damaging effects of storms and extreme weather on their homes,” he says. “Freak and extreme weather events are becoming more common.”

“Our uPVC sash windows, though, change that situation. The tests show ours is one of the best available. Lots of our customers are replacing rickety and draughty wooden sash windows that fail to protect against the elements. Our windows eliminate these products’ negatives, offering people beautiful windows that can withstand whatever the weather throws at them.”

The company also reports that its sash windows are eco-friendly, achieving Class 4, which is significantly above the UK requirement for Class 2. Air-tightness comes from the water-proof properties of the windows, preventing excessive movement of air or moisture unless opened.

“The high construction quality of these windows makes them a tantalising prospect for homeowners wanting to cut down on their energy bills,” Greenslade says. “People could get reductions in their energy bills after installation, which is great news when you consider Ofgem announced costs would rise by a further five per cent from next year.”

The windows are also 100 per cent recyclable, enhancing their green credentials further. Recycling plants can reuse the plastic UPVC elements by shredding and breaking them down before forming them into new plastic products, such as piping.

“The lifecycle of these sash windows is considerably longer than many people imagine. Yes, products will eventually require replacement after many decades, but even then, they can find new uses,” Greenslade says.

Colin’s Sash Windows is one of the UK's foremost suppliers of sash windows. The innovative brand entered the UK market in 2014, setting up in Luton, offering affordable, fixed prices to property owners nationwide

“Before we came along, sash windows were only available at high prices through window installers,” Greenslade says. “But now customers can come to us and get the high-quality windows of their dreams, designed to withstand worse than the worst British weather has to offer for much less.”
