Following extensive fundraising, BBH Life is delighted to announce that a full refurbishment of the Ositeti Clinic in Kenya has been completed.
The leading Dubai-based architectural and design studio is a proud supporter of the Ositeti Clinic, which provides vital medical services to around 7,000 people on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara game reserve, Kenya.
BBH Life helped with vital fundraising work towards the refurbishment, including donating a percentage of profits from each project. The team also brought their architectural and construction expertise to the refurbishment project, including providing advice on the installation of the water and solar power systems.
The Ositeti Clinic
The Ositeti Clinic was originally constructed in 2011, but remained unfunctional for a decade. In 2021, following a donation from a well-wisher, it was able to open.
The clinic operates 24 hours a day, providing a wide spectrum of medical services, immunizations, maternity and lab services, and operations. Many of these are funded by Cottar’s Wildlife Conservation Trust, a non-profit organization that works to conserve critical wilderness and wildlife corridors bordering the Masai Mara and Serengeti National Reserves.
Bryonie Brooks, co-founder of BBH Life, has a strong relationship with Kenya and the local community. Her father was born in Kenya, and she spent many years holidaying there. Co-founder Jamie Brooks also boasts strong links to Kenya, as he was based in the country in his late teens when he worked in the aviation industry.
The refurbishment work
The refurbishment work included repairs to the floors and walls, new waiting benches, chairs, desks and beds, the installation of a reliable solar power system, repairs to the roof and ceilings, and extensive cosmetic work such as painting.
“The Ositeti Clinic serves the entire Maasai community, so it's vital that it remains operational,” explains Jamie. “The roof was leaking with rotten ceiling boards and gutters, making it unsafe, the solar energy system was unreliable and no longer fit for purpose, and the clinic did not have sufficient power to maintain the oxygen concentrator and suction machines, which are vital in medical emergencies.”
Bryonie adds: “Since the clinic opened just over a decade ago, the health of the community it serves has significantly improved, and it has also helped to reduce deaths due to acute illness. We are delighted to have helped secure the future of the clinic by supporting the much-needed refurbishment works.”
A new maternity wing
With the clinic's refurbishment now complete, BBH Life is turning its attention to raising funds for the addition of a much-needed new maternity wing and specialist equipment.
“The addition of a new maternity wing will represent an invaluable addition to the clinic,” explains Jamie. “Following the success of the refurbishment we are excited to continue our fundraising efforts to expand the Ositeti Clinic.”
The new maternity wing is anticipated to cost approximately US$50,000, and anyone wishing to donate should contact Jamie Brook at BBH Life directly.
