FORT LAUDERDALE, FL / ACCESSWIRE / July 17, 2024 / Fort Lauderdale Florida - Yana Danzig, a South Florida teenager, has profoundly influenced her community with her initiative, Brushstrokes for History. This non-profit organization, founded by Yana, aims to teach history and foster community spirit through art. Her journey began in Fort Lauderdale's Sistrunk neighborhood, an area rich in history and especially significant to the Black community. Danzig's interest in the area grew after she participated in a service project aimed at revitalizing Sistrunk. Inspired, she founded Brushstrokes for History to empower community members and students to create art that reflects their stories and views of their community.

Brushstrokes for History operates as a registered non-profit under section 501(c)(3). Its mission is to paint the history of communities, particularly focusing on lesser-known and lesser-cared-for areas of Broward County, like Sistrunk Blvd. The organization unites artists and residents to transform wooden panels-originally used to cover broken doors and windows-into vibrant works of art. These artworks beautify buildings as visual narratives of the area's history.

Danzig, an honor student who achieved a perfect 1600 SAT score and won the coveted Silver Knight Award for her scholastic and community achievements, spends her summers running free summer camps, engaging local students, educating them about history through art, and fostering pride in the community.

The vision of Brushstrokes for History is rapidly gaining international attention, with inquiries pouring in from various locations, including Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This interest marks the project's first international collaboration, signifying the potential for Brushstrokes for History to expand beyond the United States. The organization aims to establish new chapters worldwide, rejuvenating and connecting communities through their rich histories. Danzig envisions every city sharing its unique historical stories through this initiative, acting as a catalyst for positive change and a more connected future.

One of the significant projects under Brushstrokes for History involved the transformation of the historic Cone Building on Sistrunk Boulevard. The building, which previously housed a hat shop and a printing business that printed one of the first Black newspapers, The Westside Gazette, became the canvas for Danzig's art. Murals painted on plywood, including a portrait of Jackie Robinson and a depiction of a 1950s printing press, were used to cover the building's windows. These murals celebrate the history of the building and the Sistrunk area, fostering local pride and connection.

Moreover, Brushstrokes for History has collaborated with other organizations for community events, such as a mural fiesta on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as well as with the NFL and Broward College, among others, further enriching and uplifting communities through art and education.

Yana Danzig, 18, had a perfect SAT score of 1600 and won the Miami Harold prestigious Silver Knight award.

Yana, representing Brushstrokes for History and Fort Lauderdale, took 1st Place in the NUSA (Neighborhoods USA Awards Program) for Physical Beautification and Revitalization.
