Online Applications Open for the 2024 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

Online Applications Open for the 2024 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
“Nothing is more inspiring than stories about heroic people who have truly made a difference to the world," says Barron Prize founder T.A. Barron. "We need our heroes today more than ever. Not celebrities but true heroes - people whose character can inspire us all. That is the purpose of the Barron Prize: to share positive examples of heroism with as many young people as possible.”
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, celebrating inspiring, public-spirited young people ages 8 to 18 from across the U.S. and Canada, announces the launch of its 2024 awards. The online application system is now open with submissions due by April 15th. The 2024 winners will be announced in September.

The Barron Prize, established in 2001 by author T. A. Barron, annually honors 25 outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to their communities, humanity, and the environment. Fifteen top winners each receive $10,000 to support their service work or higher education.

The judging panel for the Barron Prize is looking for young people who have initiated and led an extraordinary service activity and who demonstrate heroic qualities such as courage, compassion, dedication, and a positive spirit.

Over the past two decades, the Barron Prize has honored more than 500 young heroes. They have helped the hungry and the homeless, invented life-saving technologies, protected our oceans and endangered species, and addressed climate change, among myriad other initiatives. They have raised more than $28 million for their causes and have inspired countless people by their example.

These young heroes are as diverse as their service projects. They are female and male, urban and rural, and from a wide variety of backgrounds. Recent winners include Alex, who created a crowd-sourced web app that provides a directory of handicapped accessible public spaces; Atreya, who discovered an eco-friendly way to protect honeybee hives from virulent pests; Grace, whose nonprofit uses the performing arts to bring healing and joy to senior citizens; Mateo, whose recycling program raises money for local youth organizations; and Rahul, who provides local schools with hydroponic gardening systems to grow fresh produce.

Since its inception, the Barron Prize has awarded 1.6 million dollars to young leaders and has won the support of Girl Scouts of the USA, Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots, and Youth Service America, among other organizations.
