Associate Merger Q&A for Jan. 28 posting

How many stores are we currently converting into the new format?
Twenty-five of the 50 Kmart stores that Sears acquired in June 2004 have been identified for a fast-track conversion process. While start times will vary slightly by store, conversion of these 25 stores will begin sooner than the March 15 or April 15 date referred to in the purchase announcement. We expect that they will open sometime this spring.

What is the new format, and what is the official name?
Assuming the merger proceeds, the new mid-size format will offer customers the “best of both” meeting the everyday needs of our customers as Kmart does now, while offering more destination/considered-purchase categories that Sears traditionally offers. Our goal is to retain our existing customer base in these stores and meet more of their shopping needs, while attracting new customers to the store with the expanded offering. If the merger does not proceed, the stores will be converted as planned when we acquired them — they will leverage the best of Sears along with convenience-inspired items.

The name of this format will be publicly announced in the coming weeks.
