Villanova Track Story Book: Runners' Mental Health Awareness Campaign Launched

Winning Streaks is helping runners fight mental health challenges with the launch of “Touching Greatness, Forever Together - The Villanova Track Story: 1966-1981”, a written account of the university track and field team's 16-year winning streak.

Edmonton, Canada - April 17, 2023

With its recent announcement, Winning Streaks breaks the silence on mental health problems experienced by college athletes, and empowers them to reach out for the assistance they need.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, 35% of elite athletes struggle with burnout, depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other mental problems. Often, athletes keep these struggles to themselves, says the company. With its recently released book, Winning Streaks brings awareness to the importance of mental wellness for every athlete.

The Villanova track team is renowned for outperforming every major college team in America for 16 years straight. They ran the Distance Medley Relay (DMR), widely considered the most difficult relay there is. The DMR features races of 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile and 1 mile, and such a long winning streak required athletes to consistently overcome significant hardship.

Written by Jerry Bouma, a former Villanova track athlete and Co-Captain, “Touching Greatness, Forever Together - The Villanova Track Story: 1966-1981” details the factors that contributed to their long-term success, including coaching, training environment, leadership, and team culture. Through first-hand accounts - inspiring stories of the runners themselves - the readers will find out how the team members managed competitive stress and injury.

According to Winning Streaks, the biggest challenge of running is not a person's body, but their mental state and health. The company describes mental health disorders experienced by athletes as "the invisible opponent" and emphasizes that the physical and emotional demands of training and competition can take a toll on a runner's well-being, as well as negatively affect their athletic performance.

Winning Streaks encourages athletes to prioritize their mental health and seek help when they believe they have a problem that results in decreased motivation, concentration, and confidence. The goal of the company's new initiative is to help them address these problems early on to improve their overall well-being. 100% of the book's sales proceeds support mental wellness programs for current Villanova Track & Field athletes, helping them find a balance between their academic and athletic responsibilities.

A spokesperson for the company said, "We complement the support on this great effort being funded by “Touching Greatness, Forever Together” and hopefully you will as well. Help us support beating the invisible opponent. Thank you, Winning Streaks."
