CGTN documentary ‘Unified Future’ highlights common global values

Beijing, China / TimesNewswire /  March 22, 2023 – Marking the 10th anniversary of the concept of building “a community with a shared future for mankind,” CGTN on Wednesday launched a special documentary “Unified Future” on its English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian channels.

The documentary features heartwarming stories from around the world, showcasing the common values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom. It expresses the idea that as the world faces new challenges, China is willing to work with all countries and promote mutual respect, trust and harmony, bridging cultural divides, replacing conflicts with mutual learning and propagating the coexistence of civilizations.

The documentary interprets the concept of “a community with a shared future for mankind” from five perspectives: adhering to common development, promoting common security, promoting common openness, promoting common values, and assuming common responsibilities. It draws on stories of people from different regions in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas in fields of science and technology, culture and art, trade, and engineering.

Local farmers in Madagascar have increased their income and improved their lives by planting Chinese hybrid rice. According to local farmer Manga Jo Elina, “We used to produce less than 1,000 kilograms of rice per year. But once we switched to hybrid rice, the yields improved. The surplus brought us enough money to buy a cow!”

The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway jointly constructed by Kenya and China has brought industrial vitality and economic growth to the country. The deputy head of a local locomotive department said the mega project has boosted annual GDP growth by 1.5 percent.

Israeli soul singers heal the soul through music with their voices. Musician Gilad Segev has dedicated himself to projects around the world that combine music from different regions, “which will always remind us that peace is always better than war.”

The German port of Duisburg has been transformed into a European logistics and transportation hub by the China-Europe Railway Express. Since its inception, the railway has extended to 204 cities in 24 European countries. More than 60,000 rail journeys have been undertaken, with the total value of goods transported exceeding $290 billion. Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs from Mayor’s Office, said that Duisburg used to be just a bulk commodity port for coal, ore and general merchandise, but now it’s a container hub and home to over 50 companies generating over 5,000 jobs.

Scientific researchers at the ALMA Observatory in Chile share international data and obtain the latest scientific achievements. Chilean astronomer Ricardo Finger said that ALMA is an example of large-scale inter-continental cooperation. “Understanding other cultures is the key to peace. When people understand each other, they realize they have more in common than they thought. They cease to see each other as strangers but as friends.”

The documentary also features civilians suffering from war and struggling to survive in Afghanistan. Afghan refugee Mohamad Naim said that the U.S. let them down by invading the country – “they only came to further their own interests,” while Abdul Latif hopes for his country to achieve peace and stability so that the people won’t starve to death.

Through such vivid life stories, the documentary shows how the common development and cooperation platform created by China is significant to achieving common prosperity for the world. China has also proposed the Global Security Initiative, advocating a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept, emphasizing that humanity is an indivisible community of security.

In an exclusive interview for the documentary, Michael Spence, Nobel laureate in economics, said, “We live in a world prone to shocks due to the climate crisis, war and epidemics. The global economy is increasingly fragmented, and for low-income countries, they face enormous challenges, and their development has just started.”
