Becoming A Single Father: The Extraordinary Adventure of Pierre-Luc Delisle

Becoming A Single Father: The Extraordinary Adventure of Pierre-Luc DelisleIn a few years, the young father will tell his daughter that Daddy wanted a child more than anything else in the world and that a nice lady lent "her house" for nine long months, so that Daddy could realize his dream and receive the greatest gift in the world: life. And that's the beauty of this story!

According to the Civil Code of Quebec, it is not yet fully equal to use the services of a surrogate mother, although there is now "surrogate motherhood", a mutual agreement whereby a woman agrees to voluntarily carry the child of a couple or an individual.

But not just anyone can become a single parent. The young businessman Pierre-Luc Delisle explains that in the majority of adoptions, the prerequisites are extremely strict: "You have to own your own house and have a room ready for the baby. There are a multitude of details to manage before everything is in order for the arrival of the child. Unfortunately, this can be a deterrent for many." The COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn't help the process for those looking to adopt in 2020-2021. At that time, many airports were closed, while in all government services, waiting times were interminable.

Adopting your own child

For these reasons, Pierre-Luc used the services of a surrogate mother to make his dream come true and had to adopt his own child: "The mother even had to give birth in Ontario," he continues. "Because here in Quebec, the mother's name has to be on the birth certificate, which is not the case in Ontario. And why not adopt a child from the DPJ? "You have to be a couple of people," he says. It doesn't make sense! At best, there are immeasurable delays. In addition, the majority of adoption centers refuse same-sex couples, much less a single person."

From experience, Pierre-Luc would tell you that it is essential to choose a surrogate mother who trusts her and who is fully aware of the adventure she is embarking on. If she realizes from the start that her gesture is a good deed for others and for the future child, the relationship may be quite different. In order for her daughter Jadore (yes, that's her name!), who is already 18 months old, to easily obtain her Quebec health insurance card, she had to be considered an "adopted" child in the eyes of the RAMQ, since all the details of the surrogacy process are not yet up to date and standardized. In the case of in vitro fertilization, even though Quebec has recently released funds to develop and offer this method, we are still far behind in this area. Especially under the law: "Both at the level of gestation, and the birth of the child," he says. "Once again, it's all about endless delays."

The famous question

If surrogate mothers are more and more present in the media and if they are slowly becoming part of our customs, the fact remains that it is still a real debate in our society. Although the issue is progressing in Quebec, Jadore's birth quickly becomes a topic of conversation when he meets people. The vast majority of people ask him the same question: how much does it cost? Weren't you afraid she would keep the child? What do you think about the famous stereotypes? All this makes him laugh every time. He always answers that there is no price to pay for making your dreams come true. After putting his heart and soul into his professional success and building successful businesses, he had to do the biggest project of his life.

To achieve this, Pierre-Luc had to do a lot of research on the subject, in which he spent a lot of time. He also knew how to save the money he needed and finally embarked on this great adventure: "Many people ask me if the little one is happy without the presence of her mother. Let me tell you that Jadore is very well surrounded by a grandmother, an aunt, a godmother and even a godmother who love him unconditionally. There is no lack of female presence in our home! I wanted this baby and I was ready to devote time, energy and love to him in order to give him a lot of happiness."
